I'm back - but not happy

What does your policy say about OEM parts vs aftermarket vs used? That is where the insurance co will decide what gets used. Sometimes, the policy holder gets the option to pay the difference if they want. I don't know anything about safeco. Lots of British cars, bikes & even airplanes had electrical systems from Lucas Leach. Interesting outfit - they were known for issues in earlier times; but got better later on.

BTW I must say you have handled the few negative posts on this thread in an adult and respectful manner. Doesn't take much to be an internet tough guy as long as their mom lets them use the computer! Kudos to you.

Parts are governed by California- if they are certified to be OEM equivalent or better - then its allowed. I have not seen that certification anywhere. I will ask for it.

Workmanship/labor is another deal however California also regulates shop labor for insurance. That’s all out on the State pages.

Not according to the people there and the kid in the car.

I went to pick her up last night from the function after I posted. Pretty much stationary launch with not a lot of distance.

I'm pretty amazed.

Is she short? Sits with the seat at full height ? I'm not being a smart guy, in my line of work (Security) we have CCTV pretty much across all of our buildings and parking areas (Government). This occurs a lot, in empty parking lots. People run up into posts mostly and not just women drivers of course. But the commonality seems to be that the drivers are shorter, sit high in their vehicle and maybe forget just how much the A Pillar and Rear View Mirror can obscure your viewpoint, never mind if a visor is down.

We've had pedestrians escape with their lives many times because they are walking at just the right angle a vehicle is turning in their direction, and are completely obscured from the drivers viewpoint. I can see these as contributing factors here, I've watched more than a few of these occur in our lots and there is always a common denominator, driver is looking forward but not around what is in the vehicle.

Had one recently exactly like this scenario except the driver crawled over the front of an Audi A3 and tore off the whole front facia of that vehicle in this exact same manner. In a fairly empty lot otherwise ... visor down, saw the A3 at the last second and didn't see the turning radius wasn't quite right.

Just sayin - $hit happens :noidea:

"sheet metal (hood fender, etc). There is a "HSS" designation"

High Strength Steel

Comes in different grades, with a number that could be listed under a heading like YS MPa

That's all I know.

I guess she is. I'm 6'3" and while she used to be 5'4" she has probably lost an inch as we are well into 50's. She has that seat way up. Interesting points.

Cheers.

Well vehicle is over at Toyota Collision Center.

Turns out the technical rep/adjuster from years ago (who i have met a couple times) now manages the "preferred" shops - I saw his name on the supplemental quote and dug his email out.

He got the shop paid for the tear-down and I arranged with Berkeley Toyota to grab it. I have to go out with my truck and grab all the tear down parts tomorrow. Not happy about the xtra trip but better just to get it done. Better than them shoving everything in the back.

I'll post up the next part of the saga in due course.

glad she's okay!, and sorry about the rig. That stinks, big time. Were it my significant other, I would try to get to the bottom of what actually happened. That's scary stuff, and no matter what, something needs to change in how she handles a vehicle.
If she did hit the curb first, why did she press on the gas again, and hard enough to hop it and assault that tree?
Did she stab the wrong pedal (like those folks in Toyotas that were claiming runaway cars)?
Did she not see the tree at all due to a blind spot?
This last one seems morbid, but since I have a friend that just got diagnosed: Does she have a neurologic abnormality? (God forbid MS, or some other disease)
I hope this post doesn't come off as being a jerk. Looking at the pictures that's a lot of damage for a little rollover. I'd be worried about her and other's safety in the future.
Either way, good luck Sir! What a bummer.
And...get it totaled. It will NEVER be the same based on the damage you posted.

Actually I've seen some similar type low speed damage to newer vehicles up in Moab out rock hopping. Low speed + gravity + density can = a lot of damage.

Like I said I was not there. My wife and daughter were fine. and that's the important part.

Here's the PAX door view. The original photos are really big. You can see the lens stuff right in front of the car - higher speed tends to put more distance to debris fields - I know that from experience  - everything past that are just leaves - so indeed indications are very low speed.

Glad you wife and kid are OK there Matt. Never mind what the "internet crash experts" tell you, as in the end it's just a truck and you can get another one.

Your wife needs some remedial training. She is the reason insurance rates are ridiculous. Be sure and thank her from all of us that know how to ****ing drive.

This on the other hand is just plain wrong (and kinda rude!)
The reason insurance rates are ridiculous is lawyers not drivers.

Well, it's been a month and since it was bumped up, I just have to know ...
Matt fe2o3, was it totaled or not?

Cheers! Merritt Island? :clap2: We were out that way in Oct/Nov and caught a launch. Could not believe how inexpensive gasoline was out there, compared to SF area.

Insurance - well it's Safeco and we have a lot of it. They towed it out pretty quick and it seems to be at a decent shop. All take a number stuff. For being thin they still weigh quite a bit - gravity is gonna be there no matter what.
Freaked me out to see where I live on here lol gas does not feel cheap here

Ahh - well pulled it from the insurance preferred shop. Over to Toyota collision center. Still no repair plan.

Wiring harness issue seems to be the sticking point. Toyota wants the work but knows it will grow. They want to lock in the initial costs and move upward on the supplemental.

I'm pushing for a total. It's close.

Totaled.

Initial estimate from insurance "preferred shop" 8.6, 1st supplemental to 18.2k.

Moved to Toyota due concerns on harness and cost cutting - plus distance too far. Toyota estimate 27.5 - open ended and expected to grow.

Insurance paid all tear-down and storage. Total loss adjuster will contact me.

I had to PUSH insurance to take notice. Got them motivated today and they went there (adjuster - a young kid, and a supervisor).

All of the sudden it's a slam dunk total. The oil pan was also damaged in addition to the trans pan. Toyota would not compromise on the harness replacement too much damage.

I am surprised how soft the front ends are.

So the saga is coming to a close. Thanks for watching and thanks for the constructive comments - especially around the wiring concerns. Greatly appreciated.

Hopefully they give you a fair pay out. If the wiring issue was that contentious, better safe than sorry in accepting a hacked together job.

Soooooo

TRD Pro now I'm assuming right

I'm cautiously optimistic that the total loss adjuster has a handle on this. It's pretty much in a book and a 2015 SR5 Premium with 20k miles is actually pretty easy to value.

Whew, dunno on replacement. I mean technically they can show up with the identical vehicle in my driveway - but I don't think they really do that much LOL - at the same time there are a few out there - so I think the valuation will be fair.

I'm maybe going the Sequoia or Land Cruiser route if I stay with Toyota. The 5th gen interior I was never happy with and the armrest was too low and the window sill too high.

Options are a bit limited. I have to stay over 6000# GVW as its a section 179 and this is 5th year of depreciation. What that means for those not in the know - is that effectively I have sold the vehicle but already depreciated most of it. The payment from insurance is taxable as income. So unless I replace the vehicle with another qualified section 179 vehicle (during the same tax year) I create a tax liability. In fact I create the liability anyway with the payoff - I just off-set it with a new purchase.

I understand that the 1031 exchange has been revamped - and all this said I have to ask our accountant. I would have much rather just exchanged basis.

Glad to hear it's working out. I just cringe thinking about living with a heavily damaged vehicle that's been repaired.

Kudos for dealing with some of the less-than-mature responses you got also.

So no good deed goes unpunished - LOL

I do have the factory manual set for my 2015 4Runner that they just totaled. I dropped of the second key and cleaned out the car of identifying things -- but the OEM manual pack was in my garage.

So - When the TLA calls and we figure it out certainly I will offer them up and I expect they will decline them. If so I'm quite happy to post to anyone on the thread here who was constructive and might want a set or know someone that wants a factory set for a 2015. I'll even cover the 6 bucks or whatever in postage. PM me and be patient - if there are multiple wants I'll toss a dart.

Cheers.

Deed is done.

Total loss was 37.4 including the tax, less 500 deductible. Checks on it's way per UPS tracking.

Anyone needing a 4Runner Factory Manual set - my offer stands. PM me.

Cheers. :lookout:

As little as the vehicle was used, we will likely just go with a base Outback. We have the Tundra so no real need for an expensive SUV.
