Importance of Center Locking Diff/E-locker...

Just picked one up! '98 Limited with E-locker, '99+ face lift and tail lights, plus a few other things. Looks like a mall cruiser right now, but that'll change! :driving:

"So you are saying that a 2wd truck with snow tires is safer/better than a 4wd/awd(multi-mode) truck with A/S tires ?"

Not only did the guy not say anything even remotely close to this , but all your "points" your trying to make sound silly and really have no merit to back it up.

Bottom line , if your that worried about driving on "wet roads" then you should do what all the other women do ....stay home or call a real man to come pick you up.

If you think the AWD mode over a 4wd with rear locker will make it farther in the snow you should prolly give your head a shake.

And for everyone saying the AWD is more stable on lightly dusted snow roads under highway speed ... Ok 1 point for you. But is this one SLIGHTLY better performance feature really worth all the extra electronics or overlooking a mint 4runner because you have to have the AWD? Mabey half a point because i'm still not sold on this feature out performing the standard 4WD.

I drive to whistler from Van on the sea to sky hwy 20+ times every winter and ive never ever had an issue in 4wd and "slid off the road" ... Are you people who are worried about "wet roads" even driving fast enough for the AWD system to out perform the 4hi in a standard 4runner ? Because is sure as hell dosnt make a difference when your in the slow lane doin 40km with your hazzads on.

What experience do I have ? I wheel Toyotas on 40's in 7 feet of snow since I was a kid , and have driven the #1 HWY up through the shed on the coquihalla more times then I can count when its COVERED in snow in a bigger selection of vehicles then lots of people have ever even owned in their life.

Tires make the BIGGEST difference on vehicles , period. I've seen FWD civics on sticky snow tires make it up roads better then some 4WD Toyotas with shitty tires and bad drivers. So there is a ton of variables.

AWD system is NOT worth all the extra electronics and possible problems IMO , I wouldn't even want it.

Yours truly , A die hard Toyota fan.

I did... Your posts really dont even have a point to them? The only thing I have seen you post in this thread is how much you "Like" it and how you like to "set it and forget it" and bustin other peoples chops because they dont agree with your opinion. So lets talk about it technically speaking then .... Exacatly why do you prefer the AWD ? What conditions does it shine in ? How does it react compared to the 4WD system in standard 4runners ? How have you compared your findings based on other vehicles? Or are you just going to keep saying things like "omg your so dumb" and "this is such garbage" and go on to put words in peoples mouths and then hide behind the mob of people who accualy know wtf they are talking about? Do I have the answers myself to the questions I just asked ? You bet and you will hear them because ive had alot of seat time in both ... but I want to hear your side first. And dont post after someone else has posted and be like "Yea ! What he said" or repeat what they already typed.

Lets compare apples to apples for sake or argument since this is what OP wanted to know . 4Runner AWD vrs 4runner 4WD ... no subarus as i know your just dieing to bring that up.... "My subaru outback is so good!" Your that kinda guy arnt you ?

I guess I should ask if you have even ever owned both vehicles ? because if you have not had seat time in both ... your points are invalid .

not to mention your from Reno, NV hahahah im sure it snows like mad there ! the experience you must have is just overwhelming for a Canadian from the north like myself.

I will be back on tomorrow for your answer ! should give you lots of time to consult Google and copy and paste some other peoples opinion and ad some words to make it your very own ! And by then i'm sure a whole host of people will have posted flaming me for my post (focussing on the staying home like a women part the most im sure) and you can be like "Ya I agree with them all!your a dummy!".

Well personally I prefer the Multimode option as it gives you ALL of the above, and contrary to some peoples beliefs the AWD is actually very functional in a lot more normal city driving situations than is straight 4WD and certainly a hell of alot more than an Elocker.
Unless you live in an area that is under several feet of snow most of the year and when it isn't you are trucking up steep very deep rutted trails to get to your squatters cabin some 400 miles from the nearest city then you would get a hell of a lot more use out of a multimode system.

I would venture to guess that about 98% of everyone on this site would get more use from the Multimode/AWD/4WD/ATRAC/VSC system than they would a 4wd/elocker.

Unless you are building your truck to just mainly rock crawl then I fail to see any advantage in an Elocker only truck Vs a Multimode which covers just about every driving condition.
I don't recall hearing any inherent problems with the center locking diff/Multimode either, like everything Toyota it seems to be rather reliable.

Oh snap you just called 98% of the people on this site yuppy city folk who don't wheel their 4runners.

High five!

Yea thats pretty sad. I can tell you right now I would way more benefit from the 4wd/elocker. Now my wife, or daughter might use the AWD/alltrac crap more. Cant believe he called us street trucks. Im on this site cuz I OFFROAD SON!

Okay, I wrote this long thing giving my opinion as someone who lives at altitude in an area that doesn't get plowed and my experience in deeper snow and various offroad applications, but screw it because this has become a stupid thread. Everyone is butt hurt, "oh I have a locker so I wheel hardcore", "oh I have AWD which is better because it's easier", "oh I don't have a locker and can do the same shit as a locker so you should learn to wheel". It's stupid. AWD = partial added traction all the time. 4WD = partial added traction on demand. Locker = only extra traction if the rear is lacking traction. It's preference, if we could I'm sure all of us would choose to have them all, as the OP was trying to do.

lol That's it?? that's all you have? yeah, uh, not worth my time buddy..

LOL.... What excellent knowledge you have. Listen here you yuppie, I looked back through your previous posts and had a laugh and even showed some of my friends... Who also laughed. Some of the things you say are hilarious.

This is a quote from you about 20 days ago

"Funny I just purchased a dash mat online and it came a few days ago. Thank God My dash isn't cracking and/or currently has any cracks but.. I rather have cheap insurance from getting that way. It was only 45 dollars shipped. I'm too lazy to put it on with the included velcro strips"

Like you install dash mats so your dash dosnt crack haha, you need to gear it down there big rig and let people who know what they are talking about discuss things while you install your new glove box light mod or "mount" some vent visors with a full build thread about it.

Btw your "ya whatever buddy, not worth my time" with 5 "!" 's isn't fooling anyone.... They know you don't accualy have anything intelligent to input. Your a dork, a yuppie.... Take a seat and learn your roll.

What's up with all the insults and name calling. I have not been a member long on this forum but its a nice community so far until this thread. OP stated he failed to mentioned he already knows how the features work. Heck he already bought a truck with the features he wants.

Curtis you should start a thread on how awesome you are and share your great knowledge of awesomeness of the awesome roads and awesome vehicles you had. I bet the thread would be epically awesome!!! Because :worthless of your awesomeness.
