Injector Compatibility?

So... I know that the 85-87 injectors are different from the 88's. But, how are they different? They are both a low impedance injector (89 was first year of high impedance), so why the different plugs? Are they both a peak and hold injector?

Bottom line: I have 85-87 injectors, can I use them with an 88 ecu?

You just gotta look around. There's a few for your 3.0 on yotatech. You may find some on pirate, not sure about the 3.0 though. None of the pirate guys run the 3.0. You can find some on ebay but they'll be $100 each. You can also post in the wanted section on here and yotatech.

Why would they randomly change the plug? From what I understand, they're both a 190cc 2.5 ohm injector. Are they mechanically different? I talked to the folks at LCEngineering and they said that I would be fine to run an 83-87 injector on an 88 ecu because the resistance is the same. They are both the same flow, same resistance... why change the plug if they're the same injector? Makes no sence to me.

I have injectors from an 83-87 range and just got a wiring harness and ecu from an 88 to match my 4runner which is an 88. I'm going to solder the 83-87 plugs on my 88 harness and see how it goes. I'll post here regardless of the results (good or bad) and let everyone know if I have any issues.

Yea you'll be fine as long as you change the plug end on the harness.
They are the same except for the actual plug.
1988 was a year all by itself, maybe toyota was going to run 12.5 ohm's in 88 and backed out?
83-87 type C
88 type E
89-95 type F

Maybe they did use a 12.5ohm injector on another vehicle and just re-tooled their machines or sent the same schematics to their supplier for the same plugs on the injectors for cost reasons? Either way, it seems as if the plug type is rather transparent for those of us with a 4runner (excluding 89 models).

That's one thing I was wondering, I have heard that the needle inside the injector is different. But they are both peak and hold, 190cc, low impedance injectors so I'll give it a shot.

If this little test fries my ecu for some reason then I'll definitely buy your ecu. I'll know by the end of this weekend.

So... I installed the wire harness after soldering in the plugs for the 83-87 injectors and everything works very well. I went for a 20 minutes drive and it drove great! No more CEL for my cold start water temp sensor!

I'm just about 100% confident that the 83-87 injectors are the exact same as the 88 injectors. Why a different plug? Not sure, but I can guess that maybe there was a change in supplier and the supplier had to change the plug to something that fit their tooling? Anytime Toyota (or any other auto maker) changes a supplier they also change their part numbers so they can track their parts.

Either way, for anyone who is in this scenario, 88 injectors are compatible with earlier model ecu's. Just make sure that you are using a low impedance injector on a 88 or earlier model ecu.
