Input on 2 Piece Rims?

So I've always found the Humvee's run flat system to be pretty cool.

If you don't know how it works, a quick description:

Its a two part rim with an inverted T shaped insert that is used to both lock the beads to the rim and support the vehicle in the event of a blow-out or puncture.

Anyone use these on their 4Runners? or know who makes some for our 4Runners? I'd be interested on your opinions of the system, I personally think it'd be nice to have that extra insurance.

This type of system is very heavy and you may have issues balancing tires. On a trail only rig you can have issues airing down. I had a friend that tired it on a jeep. He kept the rims but ditched the run flat because of the airing down issue. If you air down you will end up running you tires on the ring that is designed to be the run flat part. This can ruin your tire. If you do get a flat you are better of just using your spare. If you are being shot at then run flat could save your life but that isn’t usually a problem for most.

Issues with weight can affect gas mileage. Issues with not being able to balance will cause the tires to wear quickly.

They are not DOT approved. From my understanding DOT approved is not necessary but could lead to liability issues.

When I was in the Army I had to deal with these rims. They are more work than they are worth unless you may end up being shot at.

Interesting, all the reading I've done implied that these run flat systems didn't use run flat tires but rather the insert to lock the bead and support the tread section in the event of a loss of pressure.

That is correct. The insert can pinch the tire as it tries to conform over the terrain when you air down. Also the tire needs to rid on air pressure not on the insert. While in the Army I did rid on the insert for short while, it tore up the side wall.
