input shaft grinding on crank

New her and didn't realize it was a 4runner site only, until after I had registered. But, you guys probably can help anyway. I have a 1985 4x4 truck with IFS. Got it stuck in a creek, but the water was only half way up the wheels. After fixing the coil problem, the blown out wheel cylinder and axle seals, I bolted it all up, fired the engine, pressed the clutch and heard an awful grinding noise. I assumed the clutch had come apart so I dropped the tranny and all looks good. I did notice the tranny shaft had some wear marks and the pilot bearing looked the same. How can this happen when the tranny hasn't been out for years?

Throw out bearing I'll bet needs to be replaced as well as pilot bearing
 
Not real sure what I'm looking for, but TO bearing look and felt fine. It spins with some resistance but very smooth. I didn't feel any in/out movement on input shaft of tranny, but wondered if input shaft bearing could allow the shaft to travel forward into the pilot bearing? I am over my head here, but thanks for the reply.

I'd replace the TO bearing pilot bushing/bearing and grease and smooth the input shaft for the TO bearing and the pilot bearing
 
Got pictures of these wear marks? Can you spin things by hand to try to hear the noise?

I'm having trouble picturing what you're proposing. The input shaft on the transmission has a tapered end that will only let it go so far into the pilot bearing, and the shaft itself does not move back and forth relative to the bearing - it just rides on it. The throwout bearing and clutch assembly will move back and forth on the input shaft, though. I'm with Joseph, if the grinding was only apparent when you engaged the clutch, it's probably a bad throwout bearing. Clutch setups are cheap though - as long as you've got it all torn down, might as well throw in a new Aisin clutch, new throwout and pilot bearings, and get the flywheel resurfaced while you're at. This is what we call the shotgun method of isolation/repair- replace enough shit and eventually the trouble will go away :D. But it's a good idea to freshen all that up anyway, as long as you're in there.

Did you say '85 4WD with IFS?
 
Yes.'85 with IFS. A cording to the title anyway. I read somewhere that at the end of the 85 production year they switched over to the 86 changes and made a few with IafS. I wish I had the solid axle, I think.
 
Let me clarify a little. After I inspected the TO bearing, which seems fine, I move to the input shaft. The tapered end is not smooth. Either it has tool marks from factory, or it is rubbing/grinding. The pilot bearing feels smooth and turns freely but not sloppy. I can see the end of the crank and it has matching tool marks or rub marks. I hope it's only TO but it was an awful noise.
 
The transmission input shaft should definitely not be contacting the crankshaft. Neither of those components should have any play at all fore-aft. If there is, something is Really Not Right™.

You could measure the distance between the crankshaft and the rear surface of the pilot bearing, and then compare that to the tapered end of the trans input. The two distances should be nowhere near the same.
 
Thanks KV, I'll take some measurements. Hard to think the TO bearing that moves so freely could make that noisr. And Hyde, I'll work on some pictures. Thks guys for the replies.
 
Ok. I dug a little deeper. I still think clutch/PP/TO bearing are all good, so I took some pix of input shaft end and the end of crank where it seems to be rubbing. As I grab the flywheel to reposition, it push in noticeably. I can grab the flywheel and move it back and forth about an 1/8 to 1/4 inch very easy. What can cause this? I don't believe it's anything good. Tried to post pix not sure how. The first 2 pix show the gap difference and the third one is the wear on the end of the input shaft.

The bottom of that picture is the flywheel and should be the left side. The flywheel can be push in until the gap is gone on that bolt head or whatever it is.
 
that pic is too close/blurry, I cant tell what im even looking at.

have you removed the pressure plate? perhaps the flywheel bolts are loose.
 
There are 3 pictures. The first 2 I was focusing on the gap between the flywheel and block. The picture needs to be rotated clockwise 90 degrees. The bottom should be the left. The difference in the light seen between the flywheel and block is quite noticeable.
 
Pull your pressure plate and friction disc out check that the bolts are to torque but I think that some how your crank is bent. That's the only real way to get marks like that as that part is inside the crank shaft
 
It's a weird truck. It is a 22r (carb) with IFS. Title says it is an '85. New engine isn't financially an option right now. I in full disclosure it is actually my 18 yr old sons truck. Just a rough mud truck. Sounds like too many mud holes to me. Other than pickups and 4runners, what else had the 22r that would bolt right in? I think the early '80 's celica came with it. Anything else?
 
Since it's an 85 it's a 22re more than likely just drop a new engine in
being an IFS, there was a chance it was the 3.0. but yes, I expected it was a 22r as well.

if what you are saying is true, the crank is moving front to back, the thrust washers are the problem. you may be able to drop the oil pan, remove the center main cap, and replace them. depending on WHY its moving, and how bad the damage is, just replacing them might be all it needs.
