Insane Cabin Filter...

I bought a clean 2005 SR5 last week with 58k on the clock from a small dealer. One owner and great maintenance history. The only drawback is that it was smoked in, which I'm dealing with and will eventually eliminate the smell.

Anyway, I thought one of the first things on my list would be to change the cabin filter. By the looks of it I don't think it's ever been done. Not the best pic from my cellphone but you get the idea.

Congratulations. '05 owner here and that is low miles for an '05 - good work.

Funny story about the cabin filter- I went in for my 15k mi check up/service and the mechanic comes around the side of the car holding a tray covered in pinestraw, berries, and just dirt in general. He told me it was my cabin filter. He said "hey man you want to change out your filter, it's only 59.99". I started dying laughing - saying it's garage kept and no way that's my filter, plus that is an insane price so - "no thanks" I said - he said alright and didn't even brush it off or give it a blow to clean it slightly, just walked back around the car. Then at my 30k service they pulled it out again and asked me if I wanted to replace - it was nice and clean with no straw or anything, just a little dust - in which I again replied "no thanks" Price that time was 39.99. ""The Stealership Chronicles"" - it should be a book.

LOL ! I bought a tucson last december with NO cabin filter. Its not in my checklist, until theres the stuborn smell, took me a week to realize its from the A/C .. no filter!!
I vacuum cleaed, febreeze..

As for Cabin filters I Go to the Hardware store and by the best air filter for home use a/c and Cut it into Cabin filter size squares and for less than 20.00 I have a 5 years supply !!! I Off road ALOT And its Dusty Here in Arizona .SO I change it alot But check it out you be suprised !! Save Big $

yeah thats all it is anyway. i do HVAC for a living and some of the filters you can find at the hardware store are 10 times better than that stock filter anyway. its so thin you can see through it! if you do go with a better filter you would have to change it more often, but it is also stopping more dust so thats the tradeoff

I do the same thing. costs me about 2 bucks for a filter at walmart, cut to size and presto....done.

I did the same thing. Didn't even know of such thing as a cabin filter until I read about it here on the forums.

I found mine then pulled it and brought it into work with me. I found a 1 inch pleated filter we use for A/C units at work and cut out a square to fit my cabin filter. Took all of 5 minutes with a good set of scissors.

Best part....FREE

The cabin filter is located behind the glove box, very easy to change. I think there is 1 screw that needs to be removed from the shock absorber that is on the RH side of the glove box and 2 tabs at the top that you need to bend in to make the glove box drop down. You'll see the filter tray behind it once the glove box is lowered to the floorboard.
