Installed 285/70/17 Cooper ATP

I thought about getting the ATP but the nearest Discount is an hour away. There was a local shop where I am that had AT/3 so I went with them.

One thing I'm still wondering if I should have done different is the load range. I went with the P rated 4 ply tires. I had thought about getting E but my wife didn't want a stiff ride. We have E's on our 3rd Gen and it is very stiff. We wont be using the 5th Gen as a hard core off-road truck for a few years which is part of the reason I went with P rated tires. Anybody else have the P rated and wish you didn't?

Same here. I bought the at3s P load. It would be nice to have a stiffer ride, but I can't say I don't enjoy the softer ride with the P load. Thought the tuck does wonder a bit with a P load. Wish there was a perfect happy medium.

Doe now, I'm happy and glad I didn't spend $60 more per tire for the E load. Next round I might get a smaller tire but with E load, this way I offset the cost and weight a bit.

Pics of your rig Witt the AT3's?

One thing about going to an "E" load range, though it does give you a more planted feeling it can make bumps much more jarring.
I put load ange E on my wifes expedition and the ride suffered.
Not sure if thats as much of an issue here, especially with upgraded springs and shocks, but any comments on the ride differences?

THese photo's uploaded quite larger then I wanted
I had Load E on my 08 Tacoma 4x4 and they don't bother me. Ok so I spent the day in the desert driving it and playing a little, also I have some more on road opinions. Love it sums it up. Much stiffer which is want I wanted, no more floating feeling, it feels more like a truck but one with a good suspension set up. THe ATP's are super smooth on road, while driving on the highway at 80 MPH felt like the OEM tires, no humming but the Cadillac/soft suspension feel is gone which is what I wanted.

looks great! Your other post said you went with 884 front and 889 rear. Those 889's in the rear sure do give a ton of lift - any reason you went with those over something with a little less lift, say the 895E? got future plans to add some weight in the back?

I'm building this towards overland/exploration type rig, so yup went with those coils for the storage that will be going in the rear. Will probably have to go with heavy springs once I get a rear bumper and rack but that's down the road quite a bit.

10 ply E's

Dang it. I just left Discount Tire without the ATP's. They actually talked me out of them. They said the 10 ply would be too harsh for the 4Runner Trail. Not sure what to do now. Are you guys happy with the E rated tire? I love the way the truck rides with the stock tires, but I know they stink.

They were pushing the AT3's.

I should also note that I'm sticking to stock sizing for this go around.

I am happy, I have a few thousand miles on them now and wouldn't change a thing. Not sure what they meant by too harsh, that's a personal preference for most people. If you do get them the squishy, truck rolling sideways feeling goes away.

If you are truly happy with the ride you are getting with the OEM tires, (personal preference), then Discount tires did their job. They listened to you and then knowing a 10 ply E rated tire is going to be stiffer, and give you a rougher ride as a result they talked you out of it. I have a D rated, (8) but I am sure the ride would be similar. I like a stiffer tire. I overdid it with the 8 ply, but they were on sale......

You might want to consider a C rated tire, 6 ply. Depending on make an model, you will get a better stronger tire, but not give up so much of the softer ride.....maybe. Just a thought. Be safe.

To answer your question I told them "Hey these are going on the stock 17x7 wheels, is that a issue with the 285's?" his reply "not at all"...

That's good. I've read some threads on here about tire shops giving folks grief about the 285s on the stock rims, 7.5 is the recommended minimum. I look forward to seeing the head-on pics. I've been debating over wheel spacers if the tires still look too inboard of the body.

From your sig you have an SR5, which to my understanding is a 7.5x17 wheel, in which case 285 is fine. The problem rests with the Limited guys who want to go bigger as our wheels are 20x7, and 285 is far too large. Some guys run 275's on a 7' rim w/o issues, but very few manufacturers list it as acceptable. I ended up getting the ATP's as well and have been happy with them, though mine are P rated. My rig doesnt see too much off road time as I live in GA and its mostly mud anyways. I bought a full size spare and the DT warranty, so if i ever have any problems then I just swap the spare on and head to DT for a new one. So far I have not had any problems with "squish" or anything of that nature. This is of course very subjective. FWIW, I ended up putting on 18x9 wheels with 265/70/18 tires and I rubbed even with a 2.5/1/5 lift, but it really has to do with offset.

Im with you. I have a wife and drive this thing on the road 90% of the time. THe P-rated is fine for what adventures I go on AND weigh a fair amount less than the E rated, so your MPG wont take as much of a hit.

I agree, they did their job. They called today and the AT3's are being delivered tomorrow, so I'll stop back in to take a look at those. I do like the ride of the truck, much better than my 06 Sport. But it also has 120 miles, vs. 98k. I'm just enjoying the new ride, and really don't want to make a bunch of mods right out the gate this time. I do need better snow traction than the stockers offer. The stock tire size and suspension are fully capable of the type of Colorado Fire / mining roads we like to explore.

I'll either end up with AT3's or Revo's. I wish there was a way to "test" drive a E rated tire.

I had Cooper ATP 285/70/17 Load range E installed last night. I am bone stock and there's zero rubbing anywhere, but when fully compressed I'm sure it would hit. Just posting this so that other's who maybe don't off-road but want a larger more aggressive tire then stock these are available. My OME lift is being installed now so even off road I shouldn't have any issues.

I've only driven 10 miles on them so far and they are smooth, them being load range E I immeditley noticed a huge difference in the way she handles, much firmer, I only have 4500 miles on the truck right now and wish I had done this on mile one... Although these aren't the most aggressive tires I've owned they are way more aggressive then the Cooper AT/3. I had the Cooper ST on my 08 Tacoma TRD Off-Road and the ATP seems to be a cross between the AT/3 and ST. I will test the suspension and tires this weekend...

Should have gotten a tread shot but I was tired this AM and not thinking clearly... Cooper's website has zero info on these things and they are available only through Discount tire and I will include a better shot of the tread pattern so they can be compared to other tires.

Thanks for this. I've been wrestling with it, but now I think I can pull the trigger in peace.

I have the ATP's in stock size (load E). Currently have about 12k miles on them and so far I am very impressed. They are very quiet on on pavement, stable on wet roads and the snow performance has been much better than I thought it would be - especially stopping. They also improved the handling through corners. Initially, the ride was pretty harsh compared to the stock tires, but you get used to that. They also seem to be wearing well. I run mine at 44psi. A word of caution - if you are still under Toyota care check your tire pressure after they do the tire rotations. At my first 5k check up, the dealer set my tire pressure at 30 psi and I didn't notice until my millage started to drop significantly (lol I thought I was getting used to the harsher ride....nope). Now I just ask that they set the tire pressure to 44 and have not had any problems. I did notice a small millage drop compared to the stock tires. I'm currently getting about 17.5 city and 20 on the highway. Just got back from a 3k mile road trip and averaged about 19.5 mpg(90% highway). All in all I would buy these again If the need arose.

See , see this is what I want to hear. I need multipurpose tires until I can get extra rims and tires. These just seem to fit the bill.
