Installed GX470 Driveshaft - Clunk/Thump Gone!!!!

Purchased a 2007 4Runner V8 Ltd couple weeks back with 60,000 km on it.

It had the driveshaft "clunk/thump" issue. It was driving me f**king crazy.

Tried greasing...maybe I didn't put enough in...but at any rate it did not cure the problem.

Went to Lexus dealer earlier this week and purchased the revised Propeller Shaft Assembly, Part Number 37110-60A40 for $260.

Installed today at Toyota. Cost me 0.5 hours of labour. When I told the technician what I wanted installed, he smiled and commented that it will be nice not needing to grease so much anymore.

The difference is amazing!!! Sooo much smoother braking and accelerating!!! No more clunking!!! LOVING IT!

I will provide updated info as I wear in the new shaft...keeping my fingers crossed for now.

Based on initial experience I would highly recommend this fix.

Glad to hear it, and please post back after you have some miles on the new drive shaft(s). It sounds like most people didn't start experiencing the problem until they had 5-10k miles on their 4Runner. I'll be curious to find out if the problem doesn't come back.

Like Presta24, I will continue to lube my drive shaft fittings at every oil change but I would eventually like to put a more permanent solution in place.

Im not positive, but I dont think the GX drive shaft is greaseable, so it should be fine

Toyota just needs to recall the darn thing. Seriously it's the same running gear as the GX but we don't get the recall even though we have the same issue. :redbrick:

I'm curious to see how the fix holds up after some time to wear in, definitely report back and let us know how it goes.

I greased mine like a banshee. I put about 2 or 3 pumps of my manual grease-gun for each of the zerks on the U-Joints, but I put more than 18 in the slip-yolks and ALL the thumping has been gone for almost 4 years now.

It is possible that I just needed to put more grease in the yolks...

I am loving the GX fix though. Just picked up my GF from work...and she noticed the difference right away...and she is not a car person at all!!!

Interesting that the lexus driveshaft doesn't need lubing and ours does. I too recently got sick of the clunk and pumped a ton of grease in there, probably like 25 or 30 pumps until the slip yoke started moving. The thump is gone and it feels much smoother and I figure a couple pumps every oil change should keep it at bay. If I ever get tired of doing that though its good to know a permanent solution exists.

I never had the clunk on mine but I greased it every 5k miles or so. I do not mind doing this at all. Do the ujoints on the lexus shaft have grease fittings? If so they will still need grease. I guess I am old school. I still enjoy doing maintenance on my vehicles.

The manual says to use a NLGI#2 moly grease on the slip yoke and non-moly NLGI#2 on the u-joints.
From what I've read on here many use a synthetic like Mobil1 on everything. I have not heard if there is any advantage to using the moly and I recall reading that most toyota dealers just use whatever grease they have on hand.
Personally I use Royal Purple grease, and after much research I honestly don't think it really matters what grease you use as long as it's a NLGI#2 consistency.

Any updates on this? Is the Lexus drive shaft still keeping the clunk away?

Also, does the TSB only call for the rear drive shaft to be replaced? I have the V8 with full-time 4x4 so I'm curious if the front drive shaft contributes to the problem at all.

Unfortunetly I believe the TSB only applies to the Lexus at this moment, (I'm still digging for ways to get it to work with my warranty so I can just warranty it at work...) I'll see if I can snag a copy of the TSB when I go into work on Saturday.

i spoke to one of my local Toyota service centers about the bump/clunk issue and he was familiar with it but he claimed there was nothing to do to fix it. I then brought up how "this dude on the forum" replaced this part with lexus part, etc. and he went off about how he doesn't read the 'garbage' on the forums, etc... he wasn't even sure if the 470 drive shaft would fit the 4runner and all this... wasn't very helpful to say the least. i asked him if i can get the lexus part, can you install it, and he said yeah if you know it will fit...and will charge me at least an hour of labor...lol

Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease - $12.75. I do use Mobile1 Synthetic Grease (pink color) sometimes when I run out because it's available at many places.

Just grease the rear slip yoke until you see a slight movement so you don't have to deal with him/her. Or you can ask Lexus to install it - probably better service.

Update on the Lexus Driveshaft.

About 8,000 km now on the new driveshaft. Still buttery smooth with zero clunk.

So far so good, but time will tell...
