Installing Alpine iLX-W650

Truck is 2000 T4R Limited

A friend gave me an Alpine iLX-W650 and I want to install it in place of the crappy aftermarket unit my truck came with.

Anyone have suggestions on the install? I'm pretty handy (rebuilt the front end this summer) and can manage this kind of thing.

Just wondering if y'all (channeling my inner Texan) have any gotchas, tips or other stuff to know before I tear into it.

I'd see if you can have Crutchfield build you the adapter harness. They will do it if you are buying the headunit from them. I don't know if they will do it for a headunit you already have, but it's worth asking because it will save you a lot of hassle.

Completely remove the stock amplifier and wire it it straight from the harness. Many people try and connect it and then find out there's no sound. A wiring diagram is kind of a must as the wires don't match the colors from your head unit and it's tricky to figure out the first time. I also highly recommend a small Class D amplifier, doesn't have to be anything expensive but 16W RMS that this head unit comes with is almost exactly the same as stock. You'll get clearer and more defined sound with a 4 channel 30W or 40W RMS amplifier that sometimes can be installed straight into the stock wiring with no need to run a power line (my Alpine Powerpack is wired that way).

I was able to find a 3rd gen specfic SONY harness on amazon for $20 which made the HU install P & P with the exception of a duel antenna adapter so both antennas are used.
