Installing rear spoiler on 3rd gen. Worth it or not?

I personally think it looks alot better with it on. I took mine off to change the upper brake light bulb and stood back to see what it looked like, just not right to me. I would just be nervous to drill the holes. Other than that it's simple.

Mine did not come with one and I thought about putting one on but drilling holes just creates an area of potential leak and rust. Most of the ones I see on the road are faded and make the car look dated.

I just installed one. Pretty easy sealed it up good

I installed my 4runner spoiler... just lined it up to where it was even, drilled some holes and screwed the sucker in.

Did you get any wind noise after installing it?

I had my hood painted just recently and ask the guy painting it if he would install a factory rear fin if I found one. Now I have wind noise in the rear over 65mph with all the windows shut. I think it might of been installed to high, but just curious if anyone else notices wind noise from these.

Drag was on my mind when I started hearing the wind noise. I just want to know if they all make some noise or not.

The truck is pretty noisy I've driven mine without the spoiler when I took it off to repaint and didn't notice any difference. Elevator music drowns out most of the wind noise.

That’s exactly why I got it installed. To keep the dust and exhaust smell out when the rear window is down. I think it was installed to high then.

I could maybe take a Dremel to the holes of the fin and grind a channel up, so it’s slides down? It doesn’t need to be much I’m guessing. Just need to find some way to cover up the open spot.

I personally think it’s pretty low on the road noise at highway speeds. Never really notice much wind noise before the fin was installed.

Compared to the 5th Gen I find it a little more noisy even after dynamatiing the cargo and rear seat area although definately a good improvement.

Yeah the 5th Gens are pretty "plush" and quiet. Of course though, tire tread makes a big difference. I run H/T rated tires so mine is quiet.

Reviving this old thread because the 4Runner I'm getting doesn't have a spoiler and I really like the look of one. Anyone tell me what the mounting holes look like from the factory? Does it just get screwed in like those instructions show, or are there specific holes already placed in tailgate? The thought of drilling into the tailgate is pretty nerve-wracking

I believe Jason Burtman offers one that bolts on to where the OEM rear deflector mounts

His might not have the rear deflector which is why he wants the spoiler I think? OP will have to clarify though.

Correct. I am just looking to add the factory rear spoiler. My understanding is that you either have the bolt holes are you don't and if you don't you need to drill the tailgate. So I'm just wondering what it looks like if somebody already has the factory holes.

Someone linked an instruction sheet on how to add it and it came directly from toyota, but I don't think that's how they add it from the factory

Yup, it is likely port installed on all 4Runners that got it.

Most likely M6x1.0mm rivnuts will get you there... But they may be smaller.
