Intake Goop???

I take it that this would be a reason why the Runner is lagging a bit on acceleration? Also, does anyone think that I might have done any damage to the engine? For some reason, I'm thinking that having this liquid residue in the engine was not exactly a good thing....

It's probably normal. That stuff can build up in the hose like that for years. How many miles on your runner?
Also if the PCV valve is stuck open you can actually suck motor oil from the crankcase into the air intake. Are you using any oil (burning it)?

Mine looks the same...

And I too am going to replace my fuel filter...

Weird isn't it? You'd think it would be a very bad thing for that oily residue to be injected to the clean air stream so who knows what else it affected.
Went to my local coffe house a few minutes ago and got on the Runner pretty hard. Didn't really lag, but I have only seen it happen when the engine has been running for a few....

Might have to clean out the throttle body as well.

I was just looking into a "how to" on the spark plugs... Hopefully that will do the trick as I already have a set of new plugs ready to go.

Checked out the MAF a couple of days ago. Probably a little cleaning would help it, but noo goop.

Should I just take some goo-b-gone and shove it all in the MAF? (JUST KIDDING!) :biggrin2:

Does anyone know if this oily residue will go away with time if the PCV valve was the problem? Or can I continue to expect having the La Brea Tar Pits in my intake hose....

If the valve was bad replacing it will make sure you don't get any liquid up there. You could just clean out that hose with solvent or replace it, then keep an eye on it to see if it is starting to build up again.

On the spark plugs... do not get conned into buying the $10 platinum ones. I am not sure of the 4 Runner but I know in a few other vehicles I have owned that using anything other then a good quality standard replacement actually caused the vehicle to run worse. It sucked having to pull $100 worth of plugs out of my V-10 because it ran worse, only to put in the regular NGK as recommended by manufacturer and have it run better.

Did the spark plugs and spark plug wires yesterday. The spark plugs did look different than the ones that were already in there. THe ones that were in the Runner before had the dual spark rods where as the ones I got (NGK's I think, at least that's what the local auto parts store said was used) had only a single spark rod.The old spark plugs were definitely worn as the rods appeared to be white in color, and eaten away a little (I'm assuming just from the sparks over time)

Cleaned the throttle body with a shop rag fairly well, completed the deckplate mod kinda(don't have the deckplate yet, but I dont think I will need it as I do not go into any water at all), and finally got the PVC end caps into the intake hose.

All this in 3 hours of work...Not too bad!

Seems to be running a lot better. Haven't noticed any lagging in the lower to mid rpm's as I saw before and it definitely has a little extra kick. Could be from the new spark plugs, wires, and deckplate mod.

I'll give her a few more days to see what kinda mood she will be in and decide if she wants to give me any more hell....

Does the Runner only have one PCV valve? That hose in the picture I posted goes to the drivers side of the engine, but I did not see a PVC valve like the passenger side.

May I ask how much the plugs and wires ran ya? I'm probably going to do fuel filter, plugs and wires all at the same time... If I can afford it...

Thanks!

Plugs were around 15 bucks I think and the wires were around 20. Don't really remember as I got them a while ago.....

FYI..Don't change them after running the engine...It gets a little hot in there. I had no choice to because of rain coming and burnt the hell outta my finger.... LOL
