Interior LED Swap - Swapped - Fyre Flys Wins

I had to replace one of the yitamotor LED that light up the license plate.

The festoon that yitamotor sells is/was 31 mm, but the original is 28 or 29, I can't remember, but I have posted here the actual dimension.

I was able to get the 31 mm festoon on the tailgate, but in the dome above the second row, no go. I bought a 28 or 29 festoon from VLEDS and lined the area with metal foil tape, and poked a hole on top. I have documented it here.

I ordered a set of these LEDs based on this very post and I can't say that I am happy.

First it was just a bunch of bulbs in a bag. No markings, no directions.
Whatever, I am an engineer, I figured it out.

The LEDs worked great when installed. The light was much whiter, little cold for some, and much brighter.

I later looked on their website to see what else they offered and it turned out that the set I bought on eBay for $44.99 is sold for $22.99 on their site.
I contacted them regarding their eBay and website price discrepancy but never got a reply.

Two months went by and things were looking good.

Then, one day, the main dome-light stopped working.
Ugh.
I thought that perhaps the bulb assembly just slipped out of the socket as those looked sort of flimsy.

Nope. It was busted.
More importantly, when I tried to removed it, it was very hot to touch and it's been many weeks since the last time it was illuminating.

This means that the burnt LED was drawing current the whole time, or at least when the door was open or the dome-light switch in the on position.
But instead turning that energy into light, it was turning it into heat and that is really worrisome.

Basically, it did not fail safe.
There was no open circuit upon LED failure but rather a closed circuit where the burned LED basically acted as a resistor.

Is this a poor design or poor quality components?
I don’t know, perhaps both. Now I have to yank all those bulbs back out. 45 dollars wasted.

I will call Fyre Flys and see what, if anything, they offer me.

We don't send instructions because really there is no need to. They are pretty self explanatory as far as installation goes. Sorry if this was an inconvenience to you.

The $22 set on our website was the 5050 set. We do not offer the 3014 set on our website, eBay only.

Looks like your dome light has gone bad. The current limiting resistor is still active so that is why it is still warm to the touch even if the LEDs are not lighting. No need to worry. It will not harm anything.

We have a 2 year warranty on interior lights and a 1 year warranty on the license plate lights. We will stand behind them and send you a free dome light replacement. Just need your full name and approx time of order to look up your purchase/address. If anyone else has a problem with our LEDs, just like us on Facebook and send us a message. We will reply ASAP. I would put my telephone number in this thread but I think the mods may pull it due to policy. We are not a vendor on this site.

Have both a 2016 and 2017 4Runner and want the LEDs, but don't want 6K+ temps, like 5K at the most, but also something reliable.

The FF 5050 SMD is listed at 6500K on EBay, but only up the 2015 year.

The FF 3014 SMD doesn't have a Kelvin rating that I found, but looked like it was even cooler in the pics vs the 5050s.

Looking for something closer to 4500K and only want dome, cargo, door flood, and map lights. Don't care at all about the license plate or vainty lights.

Anyone have any suggestion? I don't want flickering in a few months and it doesn't have to be insanely bright, but a little more light would be nice and below 5K would be better. I work under 4700K lights all day and shoot with 5000-5500K lights and can't stand the blueish hues and glare of anything above about 5200K.

Have you looked in the Consolidated Lighting Info thread? I'm heading to the dealer in 3 hours and baring any craziness I should be bringing home a new 4runner. Lighting is the first thing I'll be doing to it and was hoping I'd be able to get all my questions answered there.

Sadly, almost all of the interior links are for 6000K+ LEDs with a few 5K but 30 day warranty ... and the Fyre Fly seems to be only on eBay now and nothing below 5500K so far.

Installed a set of Fyre flys about a week and half ago. And have somewhat of similar experience from an earlier post about the center dome light. Mine burnt out within the first week and a half of installing them. And also noticed that the same leds that are installed in the rear hatch don't seem to have the same amount of light throw, if that makes any sense. It's as if one has a blueish tint to it, compared to the other which seems more white. Don't know if one of those will eventually burn out as well. They are great lights and give off the right amount of brightness. But I'm kind of questioning the longevity of these leds. I'm going to go ahead and contact them on getting a replacement and see how that will go.

I installed mine about 3 months ago and haven’t had an issue with them.

I did break one of the oem map light bulbs trying to get it out and then stuck and screwdriver up there to dig it out with the key on. I’m an idiot. I think I shorted something out. The bulb will flash on when I push the cover in but it will not stay on. If anybody has any ideas about that I’ll listen.

No issues with fyrefly bulbs in the short time I’ve had them installed

Yeah I'm having issues with the map light as well. One works and the other one works periodically. When installing the map lights, I did blow a fuse. I might switch the map lights to another set of led's? Just to test it out but it's definitely acting funny with the switch and all.
