First off I have a 1999 runner. I had a bulb out in the dash, so I decided to take a look to see if I could fix it. After tearing the whole console apart, I found the bulb. Anyone can do this! I may end up changing the color of the lights in the dash. If I do I'll take pictures of where all the bulbs are and do a mini write-up.
All the pieces are held in exclusively with clips, first you have to pull the cup holder piece, than the shifter area piece, than point the vents on the console down and pull that out. You will need to disconnect the wires along the top of the piece and kind of flop it down.
You can then pull off all the knobs to the heater and air con. Then pull off the face to the unit.
The red arrows show where the bulbs are, the one on the right has the bad bulb removed.
Sorry for the low quality on this one, but here's the bulb. It has a little green cover over it to tint the light, changing this, or removing it will change the color.
