I have the Lock'er Down console safe with a gun magnet that works great.

I just looked that up on Amazon...wow! Whoever came up with that is genious. I have a carry permit, so I've got one on me 90% of the time, but I still keep one in the console for when I'm just wearing shorts or jogging pants and not carrying. I'll definitely look into one of those, thanks!

I am on the fence about installing a big sky rack. It would be convenient, a space saver, and look cool. I am just worried about if I would get crap for having a shotgun/AR out in the open like that while driving just in case I got pulled over.

I am in Colorado and do have a concealed carry permit, but it still could be a sketchy situation imo. Anyone in Colorado have more experience or knowledge on the concept of having it out in the open while driving? I was under the impression it had to be concealed(with a permit) or in a case.

Because the shotgun in a case takes up so much space, I usually carry my 329PD, which I consider just as good as my 18" 870

In Tennessee, your vehicle is an extension of your home, so you can have a gun in the vehicle...loaded and ready to go. As long as you can legally own a gun, you can have one in your vehicle without a permit. The only time you can fire the weapon on someone threatening you life, is if you're inside the vehicle (if you don't have a carry permit). It can be placed in your glovebox or center console, if you want.

If I ever did get pulled over etc, I would be upfront and disclose it to them etc. I believe that the law is: without CC permit, it must be in a case unloaded. With CC, you can have it out and loaded. I will need to loom more into the details. I know when we go hunting, before getting on the ATV it must be unloaded and cased.

Just looked it up and it says you can carry a loaded concealed handgun in your car, but a long gun must be unloaded when in a vehicle. In colorado at least.

I actually disagree. Unless it's a legal requirement to notify, I wouldn't volunteer anything.

I'm not advocating lying if you are specifically asked, just simply not volunteering the info up front. Telling the officer doesn't make the situation any more safe, it doesn't put him at ease, it literally serves no purpose for you. Volunteering that you have a gun is not going to make the stop any easier for you. In the best case scenario it will stretch out your stop while he asks you a hundred pointless questions. In the worst case scenario you meet a jittery cop and you get shot while giving him your license. There's a whole lot of possibilities in between those two things, none of which are enjoyable experiences. If someone volunteers to me that they're carrying, I'm pretty nonplussed about it and more or less ignore it. I'm an oddity. I've seen officers yard people out of cars, cuff them, disarm them, then leave them detained in cuffs on the curb for ten minutes while they run the person for felony disqualifiers and check the gun to see if it's stolen and registered; only to unhook the driver and send them on their way with not even an apology when everything comes back clear.

I'm also not sure what significance a CCW / CHL. has in this situation. All the ones I'm familiar with cover handguns only, and then only when concealed on the person. Carrying a long gun in a rack in the truck is a totally different beast; and long guns generally have their own laws as pertaining to transport which don't always align with handgun laws.

But having said all that, most people want to carry a firearm legally and appropriately, and not risk arrest and seizure, which I respect. I've honestly let myself get pretty lax about my own adherence to gun laws as so many of them don't apply to me. LEOSA, among other firearm law waivers, for example, authorizes carry of a loaded concealed long gun in all the states. I've never thought twice about racking a loaded shotgun and driving anywhere in the US, nor have I had any bad experiences on traffic stops when I've been carrying and haven't declared.

But because I'm in a different category than many posters here, the old disclaimer: YMMV, check local laws, don't blindly follow internet advice, etc...

This is a 18.5" bbl shotgun but I've filezilla uc browser rufus installed these in other rigs and set them for M4s. Top quality rack and will easily swap into new vehicles.

Same here, love the locker down console safe. Very useful. I do have the electronic lock which am very pleased with, but it does add $$ to the cost.

I would recommend the console safe to all. Easy install, quality construction, and one of those daily use things.

Only two I am aware of are the cargo hook nuts in the hatch as described in the rest of this thread, or using the BSR hardware that comes with the rack to drill and install to the headliner.

That's correct. The 5th gen T4R has clips for the grab handles...how they're secure with just the clips I don't know.

I work in emergency services and have had numerous law enforcement and other emergency service friends look at mine (its also not the only mod I have so I draw some looks) and they agree that its not readily visible. Now I also have a flag decal on my back windows and a lightbar that helps block but its not needed.
That being said, I'll still notify the officer/deputy/trooper if I'm ever stopped.

Wow. Crazy. Not sure what to say... congratulations on surviving? That sounds sarcastic but I'm serious.

I respect your decision to carry but I want to make sure we're on the same page here (I'm a cop)...

Assuming you "tactically retreat" from the shooting and go to your truck and grab your long gun and then go re-engage the shooter (all of which is perfectly legal and is the right thing to do), you are placing yourself at risk for being shot by responding LE. Make sure when the sirens start arriving that the rifle hits the deck and you have your hands up and away; really if you can throw that thing 50 feet away it would be best. LE isn't in the "give warnings" frame of mind for active shooters anymore, it's a seek and destroy mission. If you are holding a gun on a scene like that when LE starts pouring in you are going to be shot a bunch of times right away - especially if you are holding a long gun, because the presumption will be the guy with the long gun is the guy who is the active shooter.

Here's to hoping that was a once in a lifetime event, but keep that in the back of your mind so as not to compound a tragedy.

I appreciate the concern and thank you for your thoughts. Thank you for your service, protecting and serving all of us. Personally, after already living this once I would be very selective about re-engaging a shooter, but the point is to have the choice which wasn’t clear cut in Illinois. However, once the threat was ended I have been trained to holster/sling the weapon as soon as safely possible. I have had people suggest tossing it before but I have also been taught that is basically leaving it unsecured for anyone to mess with. I could agree on it being set down on the ground with an open bolt and a removed mag with my hands in a non threatening and easy to see location as soon as they arrived. I also strongly suggest to others spending just as much on ADVANCED training with every weapon one carries as you do on the actual weapons and ammo.. its not only going to save a life most likely it will help you from doing something really stupid that you cannot take back.. they really pound a lot of serious common mistakes in your head.

Honestly, I only want the long gun for situations where an assailant has superior firepower/numbers...same as you fellas/gals. I pray it only ever punches paper, or rings steel plates.

If you are going to be in action with a long gun or any firearm make sure you call 911 as well and inform the operator of the situation, who you are and how you found yourself in the situation , clothing you are wearing, description of vehicle you are in so they can also relay the message to LE on the radio arriving or enroute to the scene. Give the same info of the bad guy as well of course. The more info the better, just in case that might save your ass from being missed ID as the bad guy. More than likely the 911 operator will tell you to stand down and wait for the police to do their job or tell you not to shoot them from my past close encounter experience but that's your judgement to make. yeah yeah calling 911 might incriminate you blah blah lawyer up later but since you are in hero/defensive mode already hopefully all ends well for you.

Interstate travel with firearms inside vehicles is a much more troublesome adventure than it used to be. Just leaving Florida to hunt in North Carolina makes me want to just stay home. It can be done I know, but the liability has gone stupid in my opinion.

I can remember the days of rifles clearly visible in my old pickup as a kid. Sadly those days are long gone. Whats even worse as Im not even that old.

I still see that from time to time in Missouri.

When traveling cross country - this is my preferred storage location in my 5th Gen:

Note the above works while the seats are up or folded down flat.

For driving around my area, I go with this:

If I'm going to Cowboy Action Shoot, I'll case my long guns and put them in the far back.
