Is there a need for cup holders on the 96-98?

Alright guys I am now back from camping down in Anza Borrego. All orders are now boxed up and packaged. I will be using 2-3 day priority mail so they get there quickly. They will be going out first thing in the morning. I also restarted some of my machines before I left and now have a few more back in stock. I just restarted all of my machines and am currently building my newest machines with hopes of getting those added into the assembly line sometime tomorrow. I will update inventory every 2-3 days. If you see "sold out" then just check back the next day.

Would the mirror version interfere with the 4wd selector? There's a lot less material on the left side of the center console than on the right.

I was thinking all shifters would be mirrored as well like on the 80 series. Could you post of pic of your center console so I can see what we are working with?

The console is exactly the same as an auto 4wd in the states, 4wd selector on the left, auto shifter on the right. I'll snap some pictures tomorrow while I'm in it. The issue I saw looking at it is my 4wd is the J selector and hangs over the left side of the console.

Still looking for a 2WD 3rd gen. If nobody local has a 2WD then I have another option. if someone on here purchased my double cup holder for the 2WD and then took good pics of it installed. Perfect. So all I need is the bezel from either a 2WD or 4WD manual tranny. First to ship me one gets a cup holder for free. I will need about a week to perfect the print and will then ship back the bezel as soon as I'm done pulling measurements and test fitting.

Do you still need a manual tranny bezel? I have a 98 4WD manual bezel you can use. Pm your mailing address if you need it.

So here's my review of my single cup holder. Short version, it's great! I really like having my giant water bottle in my car and not rolling around the passenger floor area.

That being said I did have a few issues. First off with the provided tape it would seal the black part and the blue part together in this photo

The problem I could forsee with this is that if I wanted to change my stereo the black part needs to come off, but not the blue part. So I didn't use the bottom most tape strip.

The only real issue I had was a gap. I think I installed it in the right place, with the shifter housing right in the notch. The holder is right up next to the shifter housing but it still hangs a little too far off to the side.

I think this compounded with not using bottom strip of tape along with not having a drill bit long enough for the bottom screw gives a fair amount of play. I'm just going to cut a small strip of wood in the morning as a shim and use a longer drill bit and not worry about. It is really great. Even with the play and only one screw and not all the tape it is secure enough that I don't worry about it spilling.

That is weird that you have a gap there. On the center console I have here there is zero gap. Not sure what the difference is. The thing that doesn't make sense is that the vehicle I used for pictures had a perfect fit. I did use all 4 strips of adhesive and used good force front the back to make sure the adhesive bonded all the way across, but that is like a 1/4" gap. Really strange. I definitely want to figure that out. There should be zero gap. Nice tight fit everywhere.

Edit: I just went out to my garage and test a single cup holder I have and it fit great. Zero gap of any kind. I'm heading out for church but as soon as I get back I will snap and post some pics. Is it possible your gray/blue bottom bezel is not in correctly, causing the cup holder to be pushed out? Maybe you stuck the adhesive that is underneath (mounts to the top) first at a goofy angle and it's binding up the cup holder and preventing it from rotating into place correctly. It is REALLY important you stick it correctly the first time. It does NOT let go and is a PITA if you stick it on wonky.

Edit #2: You mentioned your drill bit being too short. I have already installed 3 of these with no drill bit issue. The first time I used my own drill bits and the 2nd time I used my buddies. There was about 3/4" of left over length after I made the hole both times. Unfortunately your the 2nd person who had a drill bit issue. That tells me there is a bigger variation in drill bit lengths out there then I realized. What I will probably do is just ship cup holders with a self taping screw for the bottom hole. That way you don't need a drill bit of any kind for the lower deep hole. That should fix that issue. I will run down to the hardware store today and grab a box of 1" self tapers.

I always appreciate folks being open and clear about any issues they find so I can address them immediately. I'm still scratching my head on the fitment issue right now. I will post pics a little later of the single installed on mine and my buddies with clearly zero gap.

So I just got back from church and went out to the garage and test fit every single 4WD cup holder I have in stock. I even took a couple out of already packaged and sealed boxes. None of them have any gap. Here is one that has been prepped and ready for paint. It will be getting shipped out on Tuesday. I just held it in place with one hand while I snapped a pic with the other. It was snug front and back. My advice is to adhere from the front to the back. Once it's stuck in place snug at the front then use the screw to lock it into that position while you stick it up top and screw in the top screw. It is a very snug fit but there should be zero gap.

Thanks for posting those pictures. I think what is limiting me from the cup holder seating properly is the shifter itself. I can't move it further over to the left here:

In this picutre it looks like yours overhangs a little more than is possible with the shifter in place. After seeing how snug that fits I might take the whole holder off and try grinding out a little bit to see if that helps it seat.

I just want to be clear though, Thank you for taking all the time to put this together. I am very pleased with my cup holder and the form and function of it. My installation could completely be user error. I really like this product.

Interesting. Mine does hang over about 1/8th" because the 98 one I used for fitment had about a 1/8" gap between the black bezel and the shifter housing. Yours has zero gap. Your gap is on the other side. I didn't think about the fact that the shifter could come up through that hole with some slight variation. That is an easy fix. I will just go in and cut that notch 1/8" more. That should account for that variation. Should take a couple minutes to do the change. I'm glad you showed that pic of the top view. It allows me to clearly see what's happening and what I need to change. Thanks. I think if you would have screwed in the front lower screw first that gap would be gone. It may push out the back a tad but you would never see that. Either way, from here on out, the cup holders will have the added clearance needed.

I just went back through my pics and can clearly see the shifter bezel on the 98 I used is not straight. The gap at the bottom driver side is larger than at the top which is why the gap on the passenger side was less allowing the cup holder to sit flush. I never even noticed this. I have no idea if this is common or not, but I already clearanced the design another 1/8" to account for the variance. I stopped all printers making these and will be starting them all up with the new design in a few minutes. Any gap issues should now be addressed. Here is a pic for reference.

I noticed it on mine, but was able to move it slightly forward and it works great. Still can get a large water bottle in the front without hitting the dash. Very happy with it.

The ones I shipped out can still sit flush but they just need a little adjusting to get things flush and you definitely need to put the front screw in first. That will close up any gap.

So it turns out I didn't have to grind any material at all. If you are on the drivers side you can push the whole bezel towards the passenger side with your leg and that moves it over enough so the tape can hold it in place while you screw it in. Then everything settles nicely. I'll post pictures later.
