is there a way to tell if my timing belt has been replaced

so is that the sticker on it in your picture? i have a sticker there but it just says somethine about 'instructions for replacing VVTI device'.

Has anyone just let it go and had the belt brake?? It would be intersting to know how many broken belts there actually have been because of mileage.

i was wondering the same thing, lol. i've done tons of google searches trying to find info and can't find anything, haha.

If you bought it locally maybe the local dealer has a service record in their computer.
But as has been stated, the dealer would put the sticker on the timing cover.

i didn't see any sticker and called them with my VIN but found nothing. so i scheduled my appointment for tuesday. i would like to knock it out and not have to worry about it. they quoted me ~$600. doesn't sound bad at all. i expected it to be much more than that.

That price is about right but it probably does not include a new water pump. The water pump is behind the belt and is recommended to be replaced with the belt. I replaced my water pump when I did my belt just for piece of mind but I did the work myslef. I also replaced the thermostat, rad hoses and the oil cooler hoses etc while I was in there.

So what is the recommended mileage for changing the timing belt on a 4thG?

90,000 miles.

I had a Acura with a recommendation of 60,000 miles and it was a interference engine. It got old after awhile.

That is where I put my sticker but mine is a 03 so no VVTI. There was not a sticker in this location before on mine.

i got a 98 4 cyl and its making a squeaking sound does that mean its time to replace the fan belts?

The V6 has a chain

The V8 a belt.

Can someone explain why one has the chain and the other a belt?

Belts are quieter than chains. Since the same V8 is used in a "luxury" SUV, I think they wanted to keep it was quiet as possible. So they decided to sacrifice some of the long term durability of a chain to keep those luxury buyers happy with a quieter engine.

Bringing back an old thread. I know a lot of people have trouble believing the the previous owner changed the timing belt. As did I. So I asked the owner where he had most of his work done and I called them with my VIN and double checked that the timing belt was done along with the water pump and the date also the mileage. Just a little tip if you're questioning it.
