Is this noise valve tape? Guessing I need a valve adjustment

Been trying to figure out what this noise is.

valve tick - YouTube

I know that one component is a VSV valve that needs to be replaced but there is in fact tap from the engine block itself. The noise only becomes apparent AFTER the engine has been warmed up to operating temperature for awhile. I talked to a mechanic that is going to do my rear axle seals and he said that valve shimming is very labor intensive.

Btw, been running Mobil 1 in the engine for years with regular changes. 250k miles.

What do y'all think? Is it in need of adjustment? Is this something to worry about? Feels like worrying about a sick kid!

We see what other think. To me thst sound more like a lower end knock then I injector or valve tick.

At 250 to 300k. The valves do need adjusted though as that's normal time for them.

Sounds a little more bottom-end-y to me too, but also sounds nicely regular unlike most bearing issues. Does it always follow the engine RPM? Does it get bad and then less bad on quick blips of the the throttle? (say, rev to 2.5k rpm and let off the throttle)

Get that ground hooked up again while you are in there...

It's kind of an inbetween sound. Not a nice lightweight tappy tappy sound, but not quite the deep heavy sounding clunk clunk of a rod bearing. But certainly tending toward the heavier side of the two.

Piston slap (pistons a bit loose in the bores) is worse when cold, when warmed up the pistons expand a little and quiet down some. So getting worse as it warms up doesn't track with that.

As mentioned, rev the motor up and down some and see if/how the sound changes as the motor revs up and down.

Possibly (hail mary) take all the belts off the front of the motor and start it up, see what it sounds like.

Shimming valves on a setup like this is a bit tedious, and there are 24 valves to deal with. You could try pulling the valve covers and eyeballing the cam and shim condition. if it's gotten loose and tappy, it's probably got visible signs of wear.

Why does half way through the video it looks like a hose not connected to anything?

As mentioned the ground is important to the sensors, please hook it up.

As mentioned before at your milage some of the exhaust valves will need adjusting.

Sounds almost like a spark plug porcelain has cracked and is arcing/grounding out. You might try checking your spark plugs for carbon tracking. Otherwise, you should consider getting a mechanics stethoscope and trying to locate where it’s the loudest. Doesn’t sound like valve tap to me or Toyota tick (loud fuel injectors).

It basically disappears when I get above 2.5k rpm Does not get louder, just faster. When you say "bottom-end-y", do you mean a deeper sound? The deeper noise is the VSV valve chattering away. I will replace that part and redo the video for everybody.

Mine was higher frequency when I had a spark plug chattering as I had one PO that I don't think ever changed his spark plugs and half the electrode snap off and is stuck in the piston surface at 215k. Very good thought as maybe it sounds different. Mine was more like vavle tapping. :)

You really need those grounds bolted back up as those are very important as many users have suggested. The bolt head is 10mm and thread is 6mm x 1.25 or 1.00 ( I don't recall off the top of my head).

P.S. If you know something is bad like the VSV valve you really should fix it before doing a video asking people what they think the sounds are as extra sounds make it extremely difficult to properly diagnose.. :)

As leaving hoses disconnected etc can and will effect other things.

Just thoughts for sound diagnosis. :)

Yes, I will run by lowes tomorrow. When I got the valve cover gaskets done a few weeks ago, the mechanic did not get everything back together properly...

Thanks for the help!

Jesus... maybe something got dropped into the engine or something. If the mechanic can't put back a very visible ground strap, what else was missed?

I swore I seen a hose in the video not connected to anything. I’ll screen shot it if I need too…..

It’s practically impossible to diagnose noise like this from video. Seems a bit intermittent though.

A have to agree with the others if a mechanic can't put bolts back in and hoses on. Goodness knows what else is messed up. That's a real shame as you are paying them to do the job correctly. :(

Another question would be was those knock or noise here before the valve pan job?

Found it.

I had a noise very similar to this and thought I was ready for a valve adjustment. After tearing it all apart, all my measurements were great. It ended up being the camshafts which have the split/spring loaded gear on them. They were a bit sludged up, so all I had to do was disassemble them, clean out the spring mechanism really well and put back together. No more noise! This was at about 150k miles

Just an update for y'all.

The deeper sounding noise was one of the VSV valves. I replaced that and the noise got better. The lighter tapping noise remains so I think it is time for a valve adjustment!
