Is this problem?

Well, I've had my 4Runner for about three weeks now. Gosh, I love that truck. Still trying to figure out what kind of mods I'm going to do. Well, anyway, I was cruising around when I come across a fairly long straight away (about 1/2 mile) in this shopping plaza they're building here in town. I figured "What the hey?" so I stomped on the gas to see how fast I could get it going. I know, I know, it was kind of stupid. The problem was once I got it up to about 50 I decided to let up and slow down. Kind of shocking when the gas pedal didn't come up when my foot did. So I'm now stomping on the brake with the gas still floored. Not a cool feeling especially with a real sharp corner coming. I eventually got the gas pedal to unstick, but not before almost messing my britches. Anyone else have this problem or am I just nuts?

BTW, I have an '05 SR5 with a six banger.

???? best thing to do in this saturation is to put it in N and brake from their. maybe your big feet was touching the gas while you were braking?? the gas and brake on the 4R is pretty close together.
 
Didn't think of putting it in neutral, but the gas pedal was stuck even after I lifted my foot of the pedal. BTW, this wasn't the first time that this happened.

Then you should get it checked, sooner rather than later. Remember that the 4th generation uses a fly-by-wire system so it's possible that getting the accelerator pedal unstuck wouldn't help.
 
Yup, it comes with an electronically controlled throttle. Maybe the pedal got stuck with the floor mat. That happened with my other car before. The carpet had slid foward, just enuff to make a little hump by the pedal to make it stick.

Did you get back to the dealer with this? The reason I ask is because this might have major implications for all 4th gen T4R because of the fly-by-wire. Regardless, this is a major safety item and I would report it to NHTSA via their website.
 
Happened to me once in my 4Runner and once in another car. It turned out that when I mashed the gas down it got caught under the edge of the floor mat. Checkc you floor mats, and it may never happen again.

If you ever have a runaway engine, just turn the key off.

I would suggest you put in Neutral - turning the engine off will mean you have no power assistance on braking and steering - you don't want to try to stop a heavy truck without it!

yea but the rpm sensor would cut power when it hit red line so the motor don't over Rev. you will see the needle hit red line and bounce back and forth.
 
All modern cars has some measure of safety when you turn the car off. My 1992 Mitsi give you 2 complete stops or so with power assisted brakes with the engine off. that is a vacuum systems, the steering is rpm driven so that wont fade until the engine stops. I still believe it is safer to do that then let your engine bounce off the rev limiter as you try to stop the car.
 
I'd Have to agree with Duc...turn off the engine first. If you shift into N you'll blow your engine. Most all cars have a safety feature that allows you at least one power assisted stop. Don't take your foot off the brake though until you are completely stopped. Give it a try...AT A SLOW SPEED...in an empty parking lot sometime. For the test shift to N first then turn it off. You'll still have power for at least one full stop.
 
Ok, just for shit's-n-grins I did this today, I was going down a back road at 80 I turned the key off and stopped. It works fine, steering gets a little stiff at the end but not bad.
 
Most of the time its the floormats that get in the way. I've had that happen before and yup, it was the floormat that got caught. I had winter rubber mats in there so it was nice and thick.
 
If you can get to the ignition, you would want to turn it off first but, it can get a little hairy when you at full throttle.

If you put it in neutral you will NOT blow the engine, you just bounce off the limiter. I have bounced the limiter (and governor) several times on many different vehicles, including several Toyotas (no problem).

Correct me if i am wrong, but your brake booster is charged, thus when you turn off the engine, it will still have pressure in it to assist... i have learned this from my 1971 FJ-40 when it died going up steep inclines... also, when the crap hits the fan, the last thing people think about is turning off the car.. i think everyone slams on the brakes... but i know every damm movie i have ever seen where they drive off and wreck , that's the first thing i say, "turn off the damm car stupid"

not calling anyone here stupid, just me imitating shouting at the movie, thus forgetting, it's a MOVIE... haha

Have you folks here forgotten about the "EMERGENCY " brake pedal to the right of the vehicle's brake pedal? It was put there for use in a situation such as what is being described here! I'd try that first.
