Is this Rust?

So I'm in negotiations with a stealership for this guy: Used 2000 Toyota 4Runner SUV Limited Black For Sale in Torrance CA | Stock#: TTP6325A serving Carson, Thousand Oaks, Ventura


Question for you guys here. It spent most of its life in Kansas and Virginia, I took a peek under and couldn't spot any rust - looks like there was some and it was mostly surface and was sanded off. I found some on the rear axle, but doesn't look bad at all. Am I underestimating the rust here? I have a few photos of below attached. Would love your guys' expert opinions. Please keep to the rust...

Sidenote: I know going to the dealership is a ripoff, but this one has been sitting there for a while and I'm confident I can negotiate them down to my budget range (or at least damn close to).

I don't see any rust issues there, looks very clean. Also looks like a leak at the rear diff drain plug. Worth checking to make sure that rear diff is not dry.
 
What rust???? LOL. There is the beginnings of some rust there which starts from gravel dings and then begins flaking all the paint off from underneath when it is driven in a salt zone. So if you are going to take it anywhere salty I would definitely fix up those spots. If it was mine I'd get out the dremel and grind them off and touch up. Rust on the differential pumpkin can be especially deceptive because it can be a lot worse than it looks because the paint continues sticking to the rust which gets deeper and deeper but still looks "OK". But you definitely don't have a problem there if you address it.
 
That's cute that you've never seen rust before. You probably need one can of rust converter and a can of black spray paint and everything will be perfect. The wheel centers can be painted with metallic silver Rustoleum, it matches well. That 4Runner IMO is only worth about $6k max. It's being sold "as is". You should be ready for $1000 in repairs with any car that old. Since they are a Toyota dealer see if they will put a new timing belt on it. It's time for it and it cost about $700 for an independent shop to do it.
 
California guys don't really know what rust is (count me in that group).

That looks like a 4Runner that has had a few Tahoe trips during snow storms, but nothing more. Looks pretty good under there...

Wow i paid 9,300 less for my 4runner. Thst price is a rip off. But if you like it, and you have the money, then....make a deal trump could be proud of and drive it.

But like everyone else said, its going to need another 1k in oem repairs so low ball them on price

And these frames can rust from the inside out. You need to poke around with a screwdriver in a few places. Surface rust and frame rot are two different things. Salty sand up in the frame rail thst never gets washed out can cause havoc on a truck that otherwise looks fresh.

No even close to serious rust issues there but the price is great...................................................... for the seller. :pimp:

If the tranny/engine are good, offer $6,500 and buy it for $7,500.
 
Thanks y'all! yeah as a CA resident, I won't see rust like the east coast so I needed to use my resources haha. Regarding the price, I know it's a ripoff and it hasn't been moving off their lot for a while so I've been nagging them down slowly. If they bite sure, if not I'll move on. Sadly though, that's what these guys are going for down here in LA. Regarding repairs, it's got the timing belt done and tranny flush 40k ago, and new brake calipers about 10k ago.

191k and original belt. I can change it myself for a couple hundred bucks though. I'd never criticize you for buying it as I own a snowmobile that cost me over $10k and it gets ridden two weeks out of the year, but just letting you know there are better deals out there.

You could fly up here to MN and drive one back for half the cost of that one.
