Issues - Engine light & Traction Cont.

Ladies and Gents,

Two weeks ago, on the eve of a short road trip though the snow belt...

Engine light came on, traction control light came on. Traction control wasn't working. Did the drive anyway, 4wheel drive worked and 2 days later the light was off. Toyota said they've seen something like this on a Venza but not a 4Runner.

Now... lights are on again. Also noticed that I when I slide the shifter into the 'manual' mode, it doesn't work as it used to. The gear flashes on the dash, then goes blank again and returns to AUTO mode.

I'm taking the truck in tomorrow (Sat.) morning, but I'm worried. Very worried! This is not what I bought a 4Runner for.

Anyone else seen/heard this?

What year and model?It matters as they have different 4x4 systems.I'm guessing you have sr5 though from your vague description.
"slide the shifter into the 'manual' mode"...does that mean lock it into 4x4?
If it does ...does it feel like it locks in the transfer case since you said it it was in 4 wheel drive? The flashing green light is most likely the electric A.D.D. trying to actuate the front diff locking and can't/won't lock in front differential and the light goes out. Not sure what you mean by "goes into auto mode"? Most likely A.D.D ,switch or wiring for it.

Traction control won't work and shuts itself off if it can't control both front wheels with the front diff not locking.
This is what an A.D.D. does/is on part time 4x4 Toyota's..........

My best hypothesis from what you told us.
No need to worry if it's under warranty as it's not that big of deal.

I think he means the S mode.....'manual' gear change (well as manual as these things can get, lol)

Ya, your probably right trying to deciphor it again.I thought he was talking about manually shifting it into 4x4. The only thing that is manual in these things is shifting the transfer case gears in the SR5/TE and even that activates a switch to lock/unlock the front diff. Every thing else is just activating a switch.lol
Dealer's techstream should find the problem.

Sorry for being vague.

It's a 2011 SR5.

The issue is with the transmission, not the 4x4. I can move in and out of the 4x4 easily, but when this check engine light and Trac control lights are on I don't get any help with traction.

UPDATE -

The 'top service guy' at the local dealership is stumped. They are sending the diagnostic reports to Toyota Canada head office for evaluation.

Funny enough - 1 hour after getting the car back, lights went off and everything worked again.

I'll have more news this week I think (hope)

And another update -

Toyota Head Office decided they are going to change the transmission computer/circuit board/chip. They say that should fix the trac. control error message.

Seems like there are a few people with this issue:

Mine was going both warnings on, then a few days later both would go off. Happened 4-5 times over 4 weeks.
Toyota gave me back my truck yesterday, the work order says:

Cause: Replace #PO705 = Open circuit in shifter switch
Correction: Replace Shifter

Part#33550-35820

Hope this helps, the light has been off, but who knows.
