it finally happened killed my running boards, let's talk sliders now.

I lean towards the TrailGear sliders since Elton & Brian2Sun have both reviewed them positively and they're inexpensive. But my question is do these, or any of the other models in particular, stick out far enough or have enough of an angle to be used as a step/running-board of sorts? My girlfriend is 5'5" & by the time I jack it up 5 inches & throw 35s on it she might need the extra help :lmao:

They all do. The TG ones will stick out farther though. Almost too far as they will actually stick out past the outside of the tire. Mine sit a little closer, but all of them can still be used as a step.

I sell the TG ones too. Its just that IMHO, the 67s are too long, and the 58s are too short. My 3rd gen specific ones are 64" sliders.

MY TGs do the job ok and are very reasonably priced, but now that I've had them for a while I've been finding more and more situations where I have to drive carefully to not hit my doors on rocks. I will be cutting mine off here soon and putting on some longer ones with kickouts like Scotty's or 4xinnov's. I have to agree that the 58s are too short. I think the 67s would work out fine, but I'm definitely sold on the kickouts now that I have some rock rash on my rear doors.

:iagree: Brian Here is a link 4x Innovations: 90-02 4 Runner Rock Sliders I have decide to spend the extra $50 for dom as I do not want to do my sliders a 3rd time we will not need the plate and gussets. This week I am going to take one of my old leg pieces to my friend and have him make up 12 of the inner tube/ slip joints for us I'll let you know when they are done. Also looks like they are currently out of stock so may not be a bad idea to get the order rolling.

That's the nice thing about the do it yourself sliders is that you can position them where you want or where is needed for your application.

(i would also be interested in hearing people's recommendations and thoughts on bolt-on sliders)

IMO. That is a lot of holes to be drilling in the frame I know a lot of people do it. I think that if you had special brackets that warped the frame so your bolts tighten down on the brackets on both sides of the frame it would be better. but the brackets would have to fit tight to the frame to begin with. That's just my 2cents.

Yes. I built them for my old 2000 sport as well (Same flares).

How far are you guys mounting them out from the doors? I was thinking of dropping a plumb line down from the part of the door that sticks out farthest, then mounting two inches out from that, or make the kick-out even with, or a half inch outside the limited flair.

Think this will be too much? What have you guys had success with?

Here they are. Came as promised and man are they beefy. I've got Thursday off and plan to get these things welded on. I will prob plate the frame near the legs and make sure they don't rip my frame since they are much stronger than the frame. lol.

Now for some advice. I'm gonna paint them black but what do you think about putting bed-liner on the top as a no slip surface? Ive got a gallon of Hurculiner just sitting in the Garage.

Yes, always plate the frame. But never put vertical welds on it. I use 3.5x3.5 squares. I round each corner with a grinder and weld them on in a Diamond shape so you have diagonal welds on the frame.

good idea on the non slip

They can get wet and a bit slippery in the rain or snow so that is a good idea to add some no slip surfacing up top.

Rake your leg on them a few times getting in and out in shorts and you will definitely think twice.

IMHO, its more pain than what its worth. And the back of your thigh will be raw in no time.

I'm hoping to have some sliders by christmas and was planning on running a thin strip of griptape (friends at the skateboard shop should have plenty ) down the top of them for some extra grip.
