Yep! Moved out here about 8 months ago. I live downtown but like escaping whenever I can.

I've been away for a bit but knowing this, I'll keep an eye out for your rig whenever I get back to the Bay Area. I'm east bay but regularly head to Ocean Beach and Pacifica to surf and MTB if you ever want to get together for those types of activities.

Console Molding

A few more teaser pics before pickup tomorrow morning! (This camera system is apparently a pain to install so it's drawn out the install a few extra days).

iPad mount finished! I'm amazed at how great this looks. It's very flush and almost looks factory. The paint was textured a bit to match the factory dash as close as possible.

I wanted to ask if you completed the painting yourself of if you hired out and to who?

Additionally if you know or have the materials used that would be much appreciated.


I added a modular switch panel to my center console and it looks a bit sloppy. Ive since started to research fiberglass console molding in the efforts to have a more professional look & factory look, much like your iPad display.

Once again, amazing job and I hope the function works as well as the form. Thanks for any and all help you can give!

It's been forever since I've been on here! Had a few PM's come through so I thought I would jump back on for an update. Not much new to report to be honest. I leave the truck in storage most of the year and get it out once or twice a month for some camping out in Tahoe / Yosemite or to do some diving up the coast or down in Monterey. This is my more economical daily driver around San Francisco right now, and it's equal parts terrifying and fun. I have had absolutely zero issues with the truck or any of my mods so far - everything is still cruising along great!

Thinking about picking up a roof top tent if I can find one that will let me still fit in my parking garage... I stopped by mudrak customs a few weeks ago up on Sonoma CA and took a look at some of the ones they had (PS never go there if you don't want a serious case of land cruiser envy - they had about 30 in various states of restoration).

Hey man, I won't be of too much help here - the shop that did all my audio installation did the fiberglass and painting work. It turned out great and has been holding up well! I just upgraded to the new iPad mini so I can run navigation and music side by side in split view and it's amazing!

Monterey, CA? You're in my neck of the woods. When did you come out here? Or have you always been here?

So I have just recently sold my truck and was debating between buying a 06-09 or a 2010-2012. Your build has just answered that question for me, I will now be on the lookout for a 2010! Great build, it took me almost 2 days to read through everything you posted, now I can wait to get mine so I can start!

Hey, Congrats on your diving cert! if you're into diving you should come out to the big island! We've got some of the best diving in the US. If you do get a chance to come out here - send me a note. I know a bunch of the local dive operators, and lots of fun dive spots.

Also, I've been following your build thread for a while - it's awesome, and has been an inspiration for my truck.

Hey! I didn't use the harnesses that came with the Rigid lights (except the connectors at the end on the light side) - I used my own switches and relays. I wired the rack before I put it onto the truck (some pics). I grouped as many wires as I could to avoid having to run wires for every light back inside - so I ended up with 4 positive (one for each side) that needed to reenter the cab. I then wrapped all the wires in loom and ran everything down through the gap between the lift gate and body in a bundle on the left corner of the truck (you can kind of see it in this picture on the corner). From there I was able to route the wires up the drivers side of the truck under the door sills, inside the dash, and through the firewall to my fuse box.

Quick update after a long hiatus! I just switched jobs again so last month I was again relocating back across the country to be closer to home. That meant another cross country road-trip! I took the southern route this time and the 4Runner did awesome. I'll post some more pics later, but here is a video of driving down the loneliest road in Nevada.





Also, being back closer to home means I'll have access to a garage and tools again, so I'll finally have the resources to start clearing my backlog of mods and projects!

Great read, this build thread was well worth the 30+ pages. Makes me want a newer 4Runner. Hope you get to keep going with the mods now that you are back.

Also, that switch panel in the rear is awesome. So much work/wiring but looks so worth it.
