Jangoforhire's Build and Pictures

I'm looking for some opinions here. I'm going to be put my grill lights in today, but I can't decide if I should cut the grill so they can sit flush (or a little forward) of the grill itself. Or if I should just leave them behind like everyone else. Here's a photoshop of them flush. Opinions welcome.

I'd feel more comfortable if those expensive lights were behind the grill. if they are in front, all it takes is some a-hole to walk by and yank them right off.

Looks good this way and different from everyone's. Can you take a pic of light bar behind the grill, so we can compare. I like the stealth look, but this setup is very nice.

LED DRL's

Alright so I got some more done on the truck today. First is another small project that I have been wanting to do for a while. LED DRL/turns. Most people know you can't simply pop an LED bulb in their as the resistance is wrong for the turn signal flasher assembly and it will either burn it out, or flash it quickly. I had been using the PIAA Pure White bulbs for a while (found these on harper7's build) but these have a very pronounced blue tint to them (even when off you can see the blue bulb behind the DRL lens). I wanted something that was pure white to match the halos in my headlight retrofit. To be honest I wasn't looking for these, but I stumbled upon a new product over at vleds a few days ago when I was just browsing. These bulbs have a control box between the power and the bulb to equalize the resistance so it plays nice with most cars.

Here are the lights 5K WHITE V3 TRITON LED SYSTEM | 1 PAIR - White LED - 1156 LED - Bulb #

They are very expensive for just two bulbs, but they are very high quality and throw out a heck out a lot of light.

These bulbs are multipurpose LED's, so they have adapters that allow you to use them for multiple locations if you choose. It's a pretty cool product and is presented well. the 1156 wire adapters that they included for me didn't work, so I just made my own but other than that these bulbs are great. And they are SERIOUSLY bright. I can drive down a road now with only my DRL's on...its crazy how bright they are. They also match my halos perfectly now.

Here's the bulb:

I'll try and get some pictures of them on later.

Now for the fun project - the grill lights. I ordered my lights for this to basically be a mini version of what is on my roof rack. So I got one Rigid 10" SR, and a set of Rigid SR-Q's (these are new but are basically just dually d2's in a different arrangement). I have wanted to make a DIY version of Rigid grill (that doesn't cost $500+) for a while now, and SOcalTRAILs's light bracket gave me the chance. So here it goes.

First things first, SoCal's bracket is great, BUT if you want your LED's to protrude through the grill, you have to modify it a bit as it won't allow for the lights to fit far enough forward. So I went out and got a 1/8" stock piece of steel and went to work on it.

I traced the outline of the grill onto the metal so I could make the bracket extend all the way to where the grill sits.

Start cutting!

Now with it cut out, I put clammed it over SoCal's bracket (the painted one) to drill holes and mount them together.

Here it is sitting on the truck, took a little work but it fits great!

Now for the hard part, lining up the lights

Moving on to the SR-Q's...

Grill is done! Disclaimer: This took forever. I used a dremel with a cutoff wheel and cut the wholes small, and then slowly sanded them larger until the light fit just right. Getting this right took a lot of time and some of the holes are still a little big.

View from the top with the lights secured: I hid the wiring below the bracket but above the winch, there is just enough room.

All done!

All done, here's a bad picture of it parked out in front of my shop in the rain:

Obligatory switch pictures. This is the standard LED BAR switch from OTRATTW but I had them change the text from "LED Bar" to "Amber Grill Lights".

This took forever, but I really like the results! Also I had to repaint the grillcraft grill satin back as the dremel work exposed some bare metal along the edges of the holes for the lights.

I'll grab some today to post.

Would it be too much to ask for comparison shots between OE bulb and LED? :naughty:

I too have been looking at these for a while, but was never able to get myself to pull the trigger, so I need to live vicariously through you :)

No guarantees. But I'll see what I can do this weekend.

Here's a shot of the LED's I quickly grabbed today.

It's a nice pure white.

Wow, they do look pretty bright, especially since you took that picture in the daytime.

I really like how the matching mini light bar setup turned out in the front grill, great idea!

This build really makes me feel like I'm slacking on my own build. So much tedious work going on here and I can't even make time to fix the plasti dip on my wheel...

Rig looks awesome Jango!!

Drl

Your truck looks great, all mods are very tasteful and meticulously done.
Re DRL, can you please elaborate on: the 1156 wire adapters that they included for me didn't work, so I just made my own ,

Thanks

Thanks FactoryRide! Haha I just have a bit more time to work on my truck right now than most people, so I have a little time to get creative with things!

Thanks for the compliments! Regarding the 1156 adapters, I didn't really make my own, just hardwired in the adapter. I don't have a picture for how the wiring is setup but I can try to explain it.

The DLR setup starts with the bulb, and plugs into the control box with a waterproof push connector. Then there is another wire coming from the control box with another waterproof connector. You then pick an adapter from the site when you order that has a matching connector for the one coming off the control box, and whichever bulb size you would like (ours is 1156). So when you are done, this basically just allows you to set it up like so:

original truck 1156 bulb plug ->adapter wire -> control box -> LED bulb.

But I figured out that the 1156 adapters weren't working for some reason. I narrowed down the problem to the adapters with a voltmeter. So I simply cut the 1156 prong off the adapters that they included, and then hardwired that into the DRL circuit behind the 1156 factory plug. So now it looks like so:

hardwired adapter wire -> control box -> LED bulb.

Hope that makes sense, I will try and get some pictures to make it more clear.

I am sure Vled's would have sent me some new adapters if I had asked, but it really was simple just to hardwire it in and as the adapter wire still has a push connect on it I can still unplug them if I ever go back without having to cut wires.

At eddiebx's request, heres some pictures for comparison. I swapped out the drivers side bulb for the old PIAA pure white extreme bulb so you can see the side by side comparison.

First here are the two bulbs side by side:
1.JPG

Here they are off, PIAA pure white on the right, and VLED's V3 Triton LED on the left. You can see how the PIAA show blue through the housing even when off.

Both of them on, you can see the difference in light frequency clearly.

Also BKRunner here is a pretty bad picture of the hardwired adapter. You can see the now unused DRL plug on the left. And above that you can see 2 taps, one red (This goes up to power my halos) and two blue ones that are harder to see above the red. The blue taps connect the white wires to the DRL circuit and then down to the yellow push connects in the lower right of the picture, and then up to the V3 control box.

Hope that helps guys!
