JA's Cargobox mod

simple

Ever since I saw JA's write up for this mod, I've wanted to do this very badly.

I used to have a 14 gallon rubbermaid tub woth all my stuff back there, but between the panel on the right and this box I've got everything except my jack stands, and I don't really need to bring those with me anyway.

I had so many astronmical eff-ups it was absurd. But some common sense and a little ingenuity fixed those issues. I also eyeballed the whole thing, which probably led to a lot of said 'eff-ups'. But its relatively easy. All I used was a 20 dollar electric saw from walmart, a pair of scissors, and a carboard box to do the mold.

Overall... I hate it. I mean, I love the box, it makes everything a lot cleaner back there, and I get to use all my cargo space, rather than lug around a rubbermaid box... and I'm proud of myself for building it, as I'm no Martha Stewart or JA, but the carpet is a total mismatch. The miami company that JA used has no real good match. I'm considering buying the grey carpet to see if that looks any better.

That is very strange, I used the same company and color as JA and it matched mine spot on. Other than the carpet it looks good. The one thing I messed up on was the slit in the box for the rear cargo liner, but I didn't have mine when I built it....I had to cut it to it would fit nice but now I don't have the lip on one side. Oh well....here is my box with the carpet JA recommended...

Yeah, my interior is tan. I'm going to ask the company if they can send me a couple samples, but the mismatch is pretty bad.

Oh I didn't know you had a different interior color. Just a suggestion though, it looks like the back of your seats are the same color as ours. Since the box will be back against the seat you should get that grey color that JA recommends, just a thought.

Yeah, I just ordered a sample card... I hadn't even seen that option before. It was 1.88.... but 10 bucks shipping . But yeah, I agree, I'm thinking that gray is going to be the closest match.

Guys your boxes look great! Simple, its hard to tell with the pics as the colors probably arent 100% true to life, but its not that bad really. That interior color is going to be hard to get an exact match for, I had the same issues with my 99 with the oak interior. I just picked up something close and went with it. Did you by from the Miami Corp, if so is it AM22 medium parchment? I went with AM25 medium dark pewter and that was a tough choice as well since they have 5 or 6 colors in the grey family. I cant tell if your seatbacks are the same color as ours but if so AM25 is a very good match.

JA, I'm glad you chimed in! That little extra 'sock' part really maximizes storage space. I'm loving this design, and the cadboard idea really made it doable. Yeah I did go with the AM22, it looked like a pretty good match online...in real life, not so much. I do have the sample card, which I'm assuming comes with all of them so I'll have a good look and see if anything comes close. But even so, I'm thinkin' the gray might not even be worth the hassle of ripping off all the old carpet and redoing it.

Thanks for the write-up!

Hey guys, I'm thinking about building the cargobox and sealing it off as a sub enclosure. Is the original write up still available somewhere?

It's funny you guys can't find carpet. go to walmart or pep boys, it's where i got mine and it matches perfect. Shoot for 10 bucks a roll, you can't beat it.

Quit with all the drama, OP.

Anyway, I've done it again. Traded in my 04, built one for my 2015, but it didn't really work out as well in the 5th gen as it did in the 4th gen. Well, my 2015 didn't work out for me either, and after getting back in a 4th gen, I've built it again. Cannot recommend J.A. box enough. There are some pretty awesome cargo box builds on this site, but this is completely functional and just the right size for me.
