highlander jbl has 8 speakers like the 4runner with nav, without nav 4runner jbl has 10 speakers. we have one of each and i don't think the highlander sounds any better. it depends on what kind of music you're listening to and the quality of the recording. i've listened to rap music that has mediocre quality and not very impressive on the jbl, but an mp3 of Hotel California I have literally shakes the interior and makes my heart jump with each thump of the bass drum at the beginning of the song, if you know how it goes...
you really need to give it a good listen, just as in a good and thorough test drive, to really get the feel of the truck and the sound system.

The more Digital the Better!?
After a lot of experimenting, I've found that the quality of the music is a big factor. When I play older CDs, or MP3's I've downloaded or converted, the bass & volume isn't as good.
I found this out when I bought a new remastered CD to replace a lost one in my collection. I was surprised by how much clearer it was, and how much better bass punch it delivered.
I think the more digital a recording is might also have something to do with it. Therefore a DDD (digital X 3) recording, or an ADD should sound better than an old AAD - like most older analog CDs.
The JBL is a digital unit, and supposedly the more digital it has, the better the reproduction. OK, but I find it also performs better when listening to a good FM station. However, a freind of mine in the car stereo biz says FM is analog, so it shouldn't make a diff.
All I know is that the newer & more digital CDs, and good FM stations, just sound better than my old CDs! (silly me - I used to think that all digital music was the same, because I thought ones & zeros would never degrade!)

I found this link at Toyota/JBL describing the layouts and etc. of the different systems. Looks like 4runner is missing though.

i noticed too that there's a lot of difference in FM quality as well. the mp3s coming over from the FM transmitter on my ipod sounds better than most FM stations.

supposedly there is a digital processor inside the JBL system. I won sound quality by using a old Digital remastered song. It makes it sound sooo much beter.
