I'll very likely be planning a trip out to the dirt campsites for my birthday in Feb, but that also falls in line with valentine's day so may not work for most people. Going to be planning one for March too for a bigger meetup with multiple people.

Pretty easy to find once you hit the dirt road. There's some fun wheeling back there too and all the sites are pretty well spread out or divided by the boulder piles. Didn't see a single ranger for almost 3 days, and we were there on a busier spring break weekend. We honestly couldn't see or hear any of the other camp sites and there were a couple big groups partying just as much as we were.

If I'm mapping these correctly, it looks like they may be close to the Desert View Conservation Area (day use only according to the website). I can't find a map that clearly shows the DVCA boundaries. We are thinking about a last minute trip out there this weekend and I want to make sure we aren't setting up in an off-limits area.

Very well could be, but there are established camp sites in every one of those GPS coords. We had a large group, there were 2 other large groups near us, as well as multiple smaller groups all over. Didn't once see a ranger come through and we were there 3 days and 2 nights. If you're really concerned there's a ton of BLM land to the east off the 62 and Gold Crown rd/Old Dale Mining Rd or south on Mecca instead of North towards Cottonwood.

It's going to be a TW meetup repeat that we did last year which involved a chili cookoff (although there were only 2 of us, hahah) We're actually looking at a camp site off old Dale Mining Rd. I haven't been but my buddy has and he says it's a large flat area with 2 fire pits that could easily hold 2 dozen rigs.

If you guys didn't have any problems, that's good enough for me. We are considering that area and also looking at the BLM area to the east of the park. I've never been over there, so it might be a chance to go explore and find a good spot to camp.

We'd be in for "family friendly" group trip. Boys, girls, dogs, whatever. It's always nice to camp with others who can relate to and are tolerant of the chaos and challenges that are inevitable when camping with little kids...noise, lightsaber battles, noise, 4 y.o. melt downs because they dropped their favorite orange spoon in the dirt for the 30th time, more noise, and the fact that it takes twice as long to anything.

The struggle is real. Fortunately my son's old enough that I just have to make sure he doesn't break any bones while we're in the middle of nowhere. Loves climbing on stuff, but he's kind of clumsy and isn't always aware of his surroundings.

Shortly after the time change before it gets too hot is when I usually shoot for JT. We were mid March last year. Planning is likely to start in January so nothing is set in stone yet, too many other trips going on right now. heh.

Just came across this link: BLM map

The data is 5 years old, but it looks like most of the sites are on BLM land.
