Holcomb is one of the tougher trails on the mountain and should be open in time. I worked for 13 hours on the trail yesterday as part of the AAT group(my first time with them) that has worked so hard for the past couple years to get it re-opened. Requirements would be 33" tires, sliders and rear locker. If you are an experienced driver then might be able to get away without a locker. There are several off camber sections on a shelf road, 3 or 4 rock gardens and even with the devastation of the fire a few years back still lots of beautiful scenery.
 
Would Holcomb be work as a follow on trail once we get up the mountains? I remember someone mentioning Cleghorn a while ago. Also, If we do a trail leading up to Arrowhead, those with families could head over to Deep Creek and play in the water, its plenty warm now that its summer. Any more ideas for the run?
 
Pilot Rock stock stick to 2N33, modified 2N17x regroup @ Pilot rock then go to Hwy 173. People can leave at this point. Others can choose to either take pavement to Hook Creek road to 2N62Y to Deep Creek or go through Pinnacles staging area,2N34 to Deep Creek and those of us that want can head up Dishpan(difficult section of 2N34)and Holcomb 3N93

Dishpan, Holcomb and 2N17x would be for modified or experienced drivers. This is also just a suggestion as possible run options.

Perfect. We have plenty of time for further suggestions, but that sounds like a killer run. Should we hold it on the 16th?
 
The 16th works for me but I would like meet time to be 8:00- 8:30. This will make it easier for those of us continuing on to harder trails.

Also as an FYI for those bringing kids one of my required stops in Arrowhead is the Malt shop off Hook Creek road. Decent food but killer shakes and Malts.

The 16th works for me. And I agree with meeting earlier in morning to allow time to get to another trail.
 
The 16th is not a good date for me as I have family plans. But I think my truck isn't equipped enough for the difficult runs anyway. Only have 32s, stock skids, and no sliders. But I do have a 2"/1" spacer lift. Maybe I just need a good spotter?

Sounds like another fun day but like I said earlier, can't do the 9th or 16th.

If we do chose the 16th, I totally hope you can make it in August. I plan on trying to organize monthly meets with the help of Pikeman and the more experienced guys. I'm not the most experienced, but I am definitely motivated to learn the routes, as I plan on hitting the trails until my T4R dies (which I hope is at least 10 years). When we consider the dates, we have to consider who will be leading the route, and honestly, Pikeman is about the most experienced we have on the trails in the San Berdo/San Jac mountains. I was hoping that there would be some guys in the San Diego or Los Angeles area that would feel confident leading one of the next events in their respective area. We could always go out into the desert too. I am always open to suggestions guys.
 
The desert is too hot right now. It'll be more like Sept/Oct. before that's an option again.

I live in Lake Arrowhead so I'm sorta "familiar" with the area up here. :) I've ran all the trails up here this year already except Holcomb (which just opened again). I was going to run it last night but got sidetracked. John Bull and Dishpan are harder than they were last year. Dish is still doable with just a rear locker, but it got more challenging to pick your lines. If anyone is planning to run John Bull soon, the trail leader needs to have a winch because just a rear locker won't cut it anymore on JB.
 
Brian2Sun, Jmoney, Drifter and a few others are as knowledgeable or more of the trails in San Berdo and Cougar Buttes than I am. I think I am more familiar with San Jacinto though. I have wheeled with all those guys and they are great trail leaders too. In fact was going to have them take the lead on the more difficult runs while I stayed with the stock/ new off roaders. At least until the split up and then go run Dishpan or whatever with them. Main point is that as much as I love to get out there and lead we have several others that can if I am not available.

Hey Jason.

I will be leading a run Sat Aug 6 at Corral Canyon, about an hour east of San Diego. Starting at Bronco Flats (5) to Bronco Peak (3) to Sidewinder (8). More details will follow shortly on a new thread. Here is a couple of links to the run.

For the experienced guys, is there a website that shows maps of trails what to expect, what are key points to see?

Or a good off-road paper map? Does AAA offer anything?
 
Don't think AAA offers anything. There are three books that I bought that cover a lot of trails but not all of them. The best thing is ask some of us that are more familiar, maybe even look at you tube for videos or the trails you are thinking of or some of our pictures we post up after a run.

Sidekick maps also puts out some decent stuff but not sure if it really goes into ratings.

I will try to dig my books up and get you the titles. Other then that if you can find it the OHV volunteer program teamed up with Jeep last year and created a paper map of Big Bear that is color and shows trail ratings in color.

JULY 16th Official Date

Date: July 16th
Time: 0800
Location:McDonalds Highway 138 exit off the 15fwy. 3230 Wagon Train Rd. Phelan, CA 92371. Trail head is still several miles away so be on time and ready to move out shortly after.
Requirements/ Equipment: Truck, Food and Water for complete day, fire extinguisher, CB or other communication. Jack and spare tire. First Aid kit. Full tank of gas(can fill up at meet spot with Chevron next door). Good attitude. Clothes for various weather conditions as it is never constant in the mtns. Folding chairs. Tools and spares parts you might have.

Trails:
Pilot Rock 2N33, difficult group will run 2N17X. ends up at Highway 173 near Rock camp in Arrowhead. This portion should be finished between 1100-1:00.

At this point can decide to run highway to Deep Creek(2N62Y) Families can hang out at the water. Difficult group can run Dishpan 2N34 then on to Holcomb 2N93. There are several options once done with Pilot Rock trail. Another option is to run 2N34 from Pinnacles staging area(near end of Pilot Rock) to Deep Creek.

I would like Brian2Sun, Drifter33 or Jmoney to lead the difficult run 2N17x and possibly the follow on difficult trails.
