Well my new gears and lockers arrived yesterday. I've been wanting and waiting to do this mod for a long time.I think it will really help with the lack of low end torque on these 5th Gens, especially with the bigger tires .

I got the front clamshell and 3rd member already built up and regeared with 4:56's/ ARB lockers F&R from East Coast Gear Supply.Just have to swap them out,hopefully this weekend and run the air lines down to them.

Anybody with a hint of mechanical aptitude should be able to do it in your own garage.

I also finally completed my fog light HID projector retrofit last weekend and the Vision-X Tantrum rock light install a couple of weeks ago. I'll have pics up when I get a chance but real happy with the outcome.

ATX Mohave wheels

Hey Harper,

Great build! I learned a lot from it so far.

I just got a 2012 Trail Edition and am new to all this but plan to hook it up. What size ATX Mohave wheels do you recommend? I want to get the biggest wheels possible with BF Goodrich All Terrains but would prefer not to lift it. If I go any bigger than 17x8 do I need a lift?

You are already running 17x7.5 with the TE wheels. It's not wheel size, unless you go up to something like 30", that makes you require a lift. It is the tire size. I would recommend a wheel of 17x8-9inch with approximately 4.5 inch of backspacing. That way you get the most sidewall for wheeling.

If your set on the Mojave's the wheel size you'll need is 17x8,6x5.5 bolt pattern with 4.5" backspacing and a 108mm bore.
Like these and where I bought mine............17x8 Teflon American Racing Mojave 6x5.5 - Rims - Mojave - Teflon - 6x5.5 - - 8 - 108.00 - 0

Like Mike said the tire size/diameter will determine if you rub with no lift,not the wheel size. I had the BFG AT's in 275/70/17 and they are about as big as you can go with no rubbing at all.You can put the BFG AT 275/70/17's on your stock wheels also and they are way better then stock and look pretty good.

namiam......I'm usually around the North Ft.Worth,Keller ,Mid Cities area and if it was around there,it was probably me.


Last weekend I changed my Light Racing UCA's out for my old Total Chaos UCA's that I just rebuilt with new Stainless uniballs and poly bushings. I took out the Icon CO's too,cleaned and checked the bushings and they are holding up like new.The LR UCA 'S rubber bushing were shot at 2 years and 35k miles and the squeak was driving me crazy. There are supposed to be better updated LR bushings I'm going to overhaul them with.

I also put on some aftermarket rear sway bar links that are about 3/4" longer then stock,with poly bushings and much beefier.They are manufactured by Skyjacker and made to fit FJ's but our rear sway bar links are almost identical so they should work out fine on a 5th Gen and possibly 4th Gens.. They are longer and made for a 2-3" lift so they don't bind or limit travel like the shorter oem ones.A bunch of guys running them over on the FJ forum. The Skyjacker part number is SBE702 and they come gold but I painted them silver.

Here's a pic comparison to a stock one and a shot of one of them installed.

Are you going to put the Light Racing UCAs back in? Mine are still holding up without a peep.

It's been awhile since I posted any mods to this build thread but I've done few over the last couple of months.
I passed my Technician test and received my amateur radio license recently(N5AAL) so I installed a Kenwood TM-V71A dual band ham radio and a pair of Diamond K9000 motorized mounts for the ham and a CB antenna too. That way I can just lower them when I pull into the garage rather then take them off as I'm getting height challenged with less then 4" of clearance left.

I also didn't like the cheesy up/down switches with the K9000 mounts so I installed better switches in the center dash and wired them direct to my aux fuse box.While I had the stereo dash adapter out for the switch install I installed a lighted ViAir air gauge to monitor my locker air pressure and a bar mount for my TAB 7.7 along with a mount for my Note II phone.

I installed the base for the Kenwood up under the passenger seat where the factory XM radio was and it was a near perfect fit.

All wired and buttoned up with the top cover for the XM and usb cable out so I can program repeaters with my laptop from within the truck.

Installed the Kenwood control head up above the mirror running the cable and wires through the headliner and down on the passenger side to the base. I took the mirror out and flattened the top of the plastic housing on a belt sander so it would have a nice flat surface for it to be attached with some 3M VHB adhesive.

Installed back in truck and wired up.

The Diamond Antenna cables,ground and motor mount wires I ran down through a hole I drilled in the rain channel under the black plastic trim just behind my roof rack mount and down the B pillar, forward in the channel under the scuff plate and to the base and the dash for the switches.
I have Diamond NR-770HB antenna for the ham and a tuneable 18 inch rubber duck for the CB on now which is good for trails. I also had a Wilson 2 footer on for the CB when I'm on a road trip.
Here's with the antennas down and then up.

I at first mounted the Kenwood SP-50 speaker under the drivers seat and out of the way but that didn't work as it couldn't be heard clearly. Mounted it at the back of the center console with industrial velcro for now but may eventually cut a hole in the headliner and mount it up above my head as it's pretty flat.

I took the Metra dash adapter for my Pioneer out and made the cutouts for the antenna motorized mount switches,hole for the air gauge and a drilled holes for a 8 inch long rod that I use to hang my Samsung Tab 7.7 tablet as it has a book cover case that works perfect and the rod is also good to hang my Midland CB so I can just hit the button and talk.

Here's pics after the completion and all back together.

And here's with my tablet in place and tethers wirelessly thru my rooted Android phone app and the sound goes thru the Pioneer Z120BT with bluetooth.

I put in glow in the dark mic holders for the Kenwood mic and the Midland 75-822 CB

I also recently swapped out my BajaDesigns Stealth 40" LED bar for their newer and more powerful OnX 44 bar

A couple of months back I also upgraded the rear lower control arms to Metaltech's offset ones and the springs to Toytec Superflex springs.

Height difference between my old SAW's and the Toytec rear springs..... about a 1/2" gain and a little stiffer.

Rear lower control arm comparison of stock vs. Metaltech's....probably twice as strong!
