Just bought an SSO Hybrid.. Which Winch?

Well I finally got my arm twisted enough with a sale to pick up an SSO Slimline Hybrid for my 2016 TEP but now I'm at a roadblock with winches.

I don't want to make this into a Warn vs the world thread and the purpose of this thread is to see what you guys are running and how much "clocking" or fab work it took to get there. Also your mount set up for the control box.

I was an avid FJC guy for many years and always ran a Warn M8000 w/Viking synthetic line. Never had an issue and would run it again (the FJC with bumpers skids, tires, racks and lights was heavy little truck) but might upgrade to a 9.5 for a little more ease of mind.

What are you guys running behind your SSO's and how do you like it? I've got a set of BP51's and JBA UCA's enroute so weight wise I'm thinking it should only be around 150#s total up front. Might add some skids too since I'm under the truck.... :biggrin2:

Miss the old FJC, but a 4Runner build should be fun!

I installed that bumper about 2 months ago. It looks great. I bought the Smittybuilt X-something 10k lb winch that SSO carries. It fit very easily. I had to mount the solenoid off the side with the included hardware, but didn't really have to modify anything.

I haven't had to use the winch yet, so no comment on its performance. Fit was great though. Also, the lower bumper cover is an ABSOLUTELY PERFECT template for cutting the bumper. Cut with confidence.

This is the route I went although the bumper and winch went to families house for holiday projects so I won't have 1st hand experience till then.

I am not a Warn fan boy by any means and wouldn't be shocked if this was one of those purchases that I love but may have gone a different route if I was doing it again. They appear to be quality winches with good customer service but you do pay 2-3x for that privilege on some of their products.....is it 2-3x as good, I have my doubts but most of the "premium" products you pay a large sum more for a minor gain. I really only think you can answer the question if the Warn or similar units being worth the additional costs to you and if you didn't spend that extra on the winch what would you use it for and weigh it that way.

I would say buy skids before a winch but I guess even that depends on where you spend your time off road

This is what I'm thinking will be my finished product. I've heard good things on the Zeno series and was tempted to try a ComeUp but there's just not enough information for me to rely on.

Probably almost every name brand winch today is pretty good. And most 10k winches should fit without much issue. I have a superwinch in a hidden mount and it's physically pretty compact. Fits basically in the same spot. No problem remote mounting just the switching, not the solenoid set. Leave that down on the winch if you want an easy install. Otherwise no mods necessary. Just plug and play. So far very reliable. 10 years ago - warn was the only winch I would even consider. Today I think they've all come a long way from then.

If you do want to move the solenoid set, find one with wires not buss bars. The superwinch has buss bars from the solenoid pack to the motor poles. It would be a bit more difficult to modify to remote mount the entire solenoid set.

I have the exact same question. I missed the sale, but because I bought sliders from SSO instead and want to get a lift at the same time.

I was looking at the same exact winch. How did you mount the solenoid off to the side?

I haven't had time to install mine yet (also need to beef up the front suspension a bit), but I ended up going with the Zeon 10-S platinum. 4Wheelparts had 175 off for black friday, plus warn is running a $200 factory rebate on them through december. Made it hard not to get the bells and whistles for about the same price as the normal 10-S.

I was a bit worried about the remote clutch, but then I noticed that even with a lot of googling I could not find someone that has had an actual problem with it in the last few years since it has been available, so that helped with the confidence.

As a side note, I'm also planning on running the power through a blue sea 7713 remote relay. It's rated at 500A continuous, and I'll be able to isolate the winch from an AOB switch in the cab. Won't even need to open the hood :biggrin2:

The Zeon Platinum line is just awesome. Upgrade from the 8K-S to the 10K-S Platinum and I don't regret it for a second.

I have an SSO bumper on the way, and I'm trying to decide on a winch. Leaning towards a Zeon 10-S Platinum. My understanding is that winch has a green switch on the back to switch the wireless function on/off. The "off" is to limit the parasitic drain if parked for a long period of time. I'd be concerned about draining my battery (depending on current draw) when camping for a few days along with a 50qt fridge.

So here are my questions:

1. With an SSO bumper and the Platinum winch, can you easily reach that green switch? Access by removing the upper radiator cover or some other way? Anyone remote mount that switch (like in the cab)?

2. Does anyone actually use that switch or just leave it on all the time? Anyone know how much current it draws?

I can't really be of much help as I've only had the Zeon 10-S and SSO bumper for just over a week. But you can easily reach the green switch with the radiator cover removed or with an access hole cut out.

My plan is to leave the switch engaged as there doesn't seem to be a way to just relocate the switch. There is a small ground wire that you might be able to interrupt and put a disconnect switch in-line. I haven't looked into it though.

I leave it on all the time, no issues so far.

FWIW I know its nice to have a powered winch but I like the versatility of this manual. It is rated 3 tons single line and and 6 tons duel line for drag, 1/2 of that for dead lift. The thing I like about this winch is that it can be used on either end of your vehicle or on the side if needed. If you are doing a recovery on another vehicle you do not need to place your vehicle in harms way to do so. One other thing is you do not have to carry the weight when you are just mall crawling. I know it doesn't look as badass but I like function over looks.

I am in the process of installing a warn Zeon 10 in my southern style bumper and there is a water line, or some sort of line, in the way. It will have to be moved. I just got online to figure out what it is and the best way to reroute it. It is going on a 2016 TRD! You did not have this problem with your install?

Got any more detail? Maybe a photo? I don't recall anything having to be relocated but sometimes the details of the installs don't hang.

There's a horizontal A/C line that interferes. I gently bent it and the brackets for it to push it further back. I did not bend it aggressively at all as I was paranoid about linking it, so my clearance still isn't ideal.
