Just got my new 13 4runner Limited--who has replaced speakers?

I could not find one with the JBL system. And from what the dealer said, The JBL is not much of an improvement (yes I know he is trying to sell). Anyway, I would want to keep the factory head unit and add amplifier, speakers and sub. What do you suggest and how much did you pay for such a replacement?

Anyone happy with replacement speakers and amp without a sub? I really do not want a makeshift sub enclosure. I'm thinking sound reading material and good speakers with decent bass response should be sufficient. Any thoughts?

I know what you mean with a makeshift sub enclosure. I wanted to do the eact same thing.

I deadened my doors (way more than I needed to) and installed 8" mid bass drivers in the front doors. It had plenty of impact but if you're really looking for good sound quality I don't think you'll be happy, I know I wasn't.

I couldn't get the speakers to play below 80hz. Not a limitation of the speaker, just that I couldn't for the life of me get the doors to the point where they could take anything lower at high volumes.

I decided to just accept the 80hz limit and had a little custom sub enclosure built out of fiberglass. It is pretty unobtrusive really and doesn't get in the way. It makes such a huge difference and I would recommend to anyone looking for good sound to just bite the bullet.

It's really a matter of personal preference. Yes you can get very high quality sound without a sub. I like a little punch but not the booming sh t. I have a sub but most people don't hear it. Audiophiles hear it and think I should turn it down. Go figure. I put a 8" Alumapro sub into the stock JBL Premium box. It was very cheap. Alumapros are known for tight, fast bass response but do not really pound like the young folks like.

I have the Focal 7x10s up front with Alpine class D amp. Bass is tight and awesome with most real music. You will notice some missing tones at 25-30Hz level, mainly present in organs and few Hip Hop albums. Dynamics and clarity are top notch, pretty close to my Panamera's Burmester.

You're claiming you have your door speakers playing down to 25hz?

Perhaps at levels barely audible when sitting let alone travelling down the road.

Do you have an RTA curve you can post?

For interest's sake there are 12" subs that don't play nicely down to 25hz.

I listen to classic, modern rock, classic Jazz and classical when I'm not listening to ESPN radio. So big, deep hip hop bass is not something I'm interested in. Do they make a small sub that can be tucked away to just "fill" the low end vs making it ultra boomy? I am an audiophile with my home system. I really like a solid, natural low end.

I am an audiophile with my home system too. I hate the thought of big boomy bass.

A large sub does not mean you have to have big boomy bass, if it's the right sub and tuned correctly it will smoothly fill in the low frequencies and you won't even know it's there. Sitting in the front seat people wouldn't even think I have a sub with most music.

A small sub will have trouble getting to those deep frequencies cleanly depending on the enclosure but would still make a huge difference too.

If you're an audiophile at home I honestly don't think you'll be happy with no sub..like I said I sure wasn't and I ran 8" speakers in the doors in an attempt to avoid it.

They are outperforming Focal's specifications for you by a fairly wide margin.

I don't doubt they sound good to you, but a properly installed and tuned sub of decent quality will be no comparison.

Looking more at the graph it looks like you aren't getting any meaningful output until 50hz or so. Focal claims 55hz in the documentation I've seen I think. Not that far off really.

I just don't know how you are even playing to 50hz at decent volumes??

When I get anywhere near 70 they want to tear my doors apart. How did you treat your doors to avoid that? I really would like to play them lower.
