Just one Outlet :(

hey guess, so i guess i didnt realize it when buying my 4runner, but just one outlet . I've seen the 4runner 2 outlet cigarette light peice, just wondering if any one has installed it and how easy of an install it was? also any other thing to bring a extra outlet or two? thanks guy

I added the smokers kit, it gives an additional outlet. Very easy to install, all wiring is already there so it's plug and play.

No doubt our 4Runners are outlet challenged. I have a number of various 1-2 and 1-3 outlet adapters that I carry in both my vehicles. I guess I'm just too lazy to do a permanent mod since it's not that often that I have more than one, sometimes 2 items to plug in.

My solution.

Start with one of these.

Open up the case and drill a hole to reroute the power cord through the bottom rear of the case. Also snip off the plug since we're going to hardwire this to the cigarette lighter circuit in the console.

Paint the PowerPort to taste. I went with Rustoleum Hammered Black...works well with the "granite" trim, IMO.

Wire it to the extra cigarette lighter circuit and velcro it to the side of the console. Voila, an additional four power ports that don't draw a lot of extra attention to themselves when not in use.

I installed the smokers kit which for me is perfect. I had to have something OEM and stock looking. I don't even really have a need for the dual outlets since I got the in-dash navi, but it was as must to get my cig lighter rechargeable LED flashlight to fit, plus it looks like it belongs there. Install is a snap, literally, it just snaps in, in place of the existing one, and the wiring is already there, just plug and play. Here's what it looks like, definitely money well spent

There are a lot of posts on this subject with some pretty neat. Do some searching (google on the forum)

It is easy to add the outlets and there are a lot of different places to install them.

People on this forum can be very talented and some of the ideas are great, some not so great, but most are real good.

I put an additional double usb plug inside the console where the power outlet would be on the Limited models. Keeps the cords out of the way.

Seems to me it might also be worth keeping in mind the maximum current that the adapters are hooked up through.

Since Volts X Amps = Watts, it might matter. In our trucks it goes:

12 system x 10amp fuse =120 watts from that circuit.

For instance. If you put a second outlet wired next to the original, you'd only get a max of around 60w per outlet.

If you need more, you'd want to run from a different circuit - perhaps the door or whatever. Or, just tap into some other circuit altogether.

If a person intends to run an inverter or has a different/higher power(watt) need it might matter…. just bringing it up.

And no, don't just replace the 10amp fuse with a 20amp fuse to get more power. That would be a bad idea.
