Just Switched to Synthetic Oil

My 2005 V6 has almost 3k miles on it. I haven't touched the oil to this point. Today I went and bought myself a case of Mobil 1
5w-30 and a Toyota OEM filter. Took it down to the local shop and had them change it (made sure they gave me the empties). We have a joke of a Toyota dealership here and I don't really trust their service department. I think I'll be happy with the
Mobil 1 and over the long haul I think the synthetic will be more than worth the extra $$$. I plan to use 5k OCI's. Could I go longer? Probably. But 5k seems like a good compromise.

There has been a lot of debate in this forum regarding dino vs. synth. For my money, if you are going to spend $30,000 (or more) on a new vehicle, why cheap out on the stuff that is literally the life-blood of your engine? There is ZERO doubt that synthetic oil is vastly superior to dino. That point can't be argued. Will it make a big difference over the first 100k miles? Who knows? But I'll bet you my truck will drive better/smoother after 100k using nothing but synth than an equivalent dino engine will.

With a high-quality oil like Mobil-1 so readily available, why not use it? It's not much to pay for a little peace of mind.

I agree with you 100%. I used synthetic on my 91' and now my 99'. I bought my 91' used with 40k and switched almost immediately. When it was totalled and I bought my 99' brand new, after the break in I switched to M1 5-30 and go about 3k-5k between oil changes. When I check my oil on a weekly basis, I check to see if it is clean. When it gets darker I usually change it. One thing you may want to consider is getting a magnetic drain plug. You can get these at most auto part stores.

Good luck with your new ride!

I assume the magnetic drain plug will pull metallic contaminants to the pan, thereby removing them from the engine oil supply. Is that correct? If not, please tell me the primary benefit(s). I assume I would just let the shop install the plug next oil change?

I went with the same set up,
Mobil 1 5W30 and OEM toyota filter. I also put in one of those Fram sure flow drain plugs, really limits the mess of oil changing.

I also plan on going the 5k OIC, it does seem like the happy medium, not over kill and seems like your getting the moneys worth out of the oil.

Great choice!!!!!  :D

So are you planning on changing your oil every 100K miles now (like some of the other rocket scientists on this forum)??

BTW, any modern Toyota engine will run well past the 100,000 mile mark if it is properly maintained, regardless of the synthetic/conventional oil choice.

Maybe you should buy a $12 Mobil oil filter instead of the cheap OEM Toyota filter.... after all, it's the best, so why not buy it?

Notice I never said the dino engine wouldn't run past 100k. Hell, it will probably run to 300k or more if properly maintained. However, I bet my synth engine will have significantly less wear and run significantly smoother at the same mileage point. I bet there are a lot here that would agree with me.

As for the filters, they are more or less the same. No real qualitative difference. The concensus seems to be stick with the OEM. Not so for the oil.

Look, it's obvious you've chosen to use dino and that's fine. Nothing wrong with that. I think this thread would've been just fine without your rather juvenile addition.

What data can you produce to support this opinion?

Don't need any data.... it's an opinion, that's all.

Just like everything you've said in the past.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Sorry for the hyjack but you guys were getting boring :)

Lets look at oil and buying a used vehicle. I've looked at a couple of CPO (certified pre-owned with the 3 year 100K warranty) Lexus LX470's and when you buy them they are suppose to be the best of the best and inspected something like 168 points. Well on both I asked to see the maintance records since with Lexus if you have the oil changed on your vehicle in Missouri and then in Texas it all goes into the national data bank. Well both vehicles with from 40-50K miles had never been maintained at any Lexus dealership so "NO" service records. You never know how someone really cared for a vehicle without the records. They could of done 15K mile OCI using a cheap dino oil. Now this will shorten the life of any engine. Why don't dealers and owners think it is important to provide a record of good service??? What mileage would you consider on a vehicle with no service records?

Excellent discussion point! I know there are issues with maintenance records stored by dealers. I had '95 Lexus ES300 that I purchased used. It was a lease return and had all the maintenance receipts in the owner's manual from a Lexus dealership in Ohio. I purchased the car in Texas and took it to a local Lexus dealer and they could find no maintenance history on the vehicle.

I had a similar issue on my '03 Z06 that I purchased new. I had warranty work performed by one dealer and then took it to another dealer. The second dealer could find no maintenance history on the vehicle. Again,

To your point, I don't really know what I would consider without maintenance records. For me it would depend on the vehicle and it's overall condition. Without maintenance records, there is only so much you can look at to try to determine the condition of the engine.

For me, this brings up another question. Do you think that just because a vehicle is maintained by a dealer that all the work was done with quality parts and done correctly? I've had more issues with dealers performing substandard work than I can shake a stick at and the reason I work on my own vechicles.

And Hitman tries to pick a fight rather than add to the thread. He has yet to supply any information with good backing by reliable sources.

Pitbull subscribes to a different philosphphy than I do, but he can back it up with concrete proof and solid reasoning. And for his purposes I agree a 100%.

What I fing interesting is that on average it seems people who run dino OCI at 3k, while people who syn OCI at 5k. Add the difference in oil, cost of filters and labor involved and see where the math ends. Besides I'm willing to bet people who run syn will have improved gas mileage over people who run dino. I look at that as a added bonus.

For interest sake Will, what has your MPG been till now and let us know what it does going forward?? Hope you keep accurate records :D BTW good choice, I like getting M1 from costco as it is pretty cheap there from time to time, so I just load up when it is.

I noticed that in the V8 MPG thread, I fall midpack to slightly better and that is with 4WD, a lift and running 32" A/T tires vs 31" highway stock tires. And I'm not the least agressive driver on the road. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I run syn in my driveline and engine??? Hardly proof, but I think the numbers will will show over time and with more people.

There is a reason why more and more manufacturers are switching to syn out of the factory and make their dealers use it for services. It has a lot to do with cost and performance.

i fully believe in synthetic oil in newer motors. i think its totally worth it in the long run. my brother ran valvoline synpower in his race motor for 2 years, and just last month he tore it all down. i wish i had pics. the bearings looked brand new, journals were clean and smooth, the only thing that really showed any sign of wear was on his cam, where he had a small scratch from what we figured had to be when he broke a valve spring in a race. no its not a toyota motor, it was a 350 chevy crate motor, with a bunch of go fast goodies on it. but i thought it would be good food for thought for synthetic. i thought it was impressive for a motor that all it was used for, was racing. it was definately not babied, but it looked like it had been.

Koz, we're not here to judge people's intelligence...no matter how smart or stupid it is. Everyone has an opinion and has the right to express them (even if it is wrong). This forum does not discriminate against that. If an opinion is wrong, then you can express the opposing view and let the other people make their own judgement. It is not within our power or right (as moderators/admins) to delete post(s) just because we think that it is wrong.

My advice: give the opposing view and let other people decide. Be friendly please. Frustration gets the best of us (i know!)...but just be nice. For me, i had to take "happy" pills.:D

I got a complaint about this thread. So I decided to delete personal attacks and name calling. This thread is now down to 1 1/2 pages, instead of three. I will be more aggresive in deleting posts in the future. Notice, I deleted posts from just about everyone who posted in this thread.

I believe in synthetic oils, specifically Mobile 1 products.

I have used them in my Mercedes and Lexus cars in the past and they both have over 150,000 miles on them.
The decision for me is whether I am planning on keeping the vehicle more than 100,000 miles or not.
If you plan to, put the synthetic in, if not, just use the regular oil and change ever 3 - 4,000 miles and don't worry about the longevity.
As Jay Leno has said, "I just maintain my cars for the next owner."

do you mean benefits from cost for us or the dealers? the dealership that does my oil change began offering mobil 1 so i asked them how much and they said 60 something dollars! if i were stupid enough to have it done at the dealership i'd be paying more than $1k over 100,000 miles worth of oil changes @ 5k mile intervals. a regular oil change is $25 so i just got the regular. my point is, the next time i'm gonna buy the mobil 1 from costco and do it myself.

I agree with you... as long as we can keep it civil and avoid the name-calling etc.. Nothing wrong with debating though...
