K&N Intake

What do you think of Intake and Exhaust modification?

I've installed K&N Intake for V6. I don't know how it would perform, but advertising saying that ~10hp. Will see in a couple of weeks.
After first test-drives of this system I've noticed loud sound from the hood. First I thought that something wasn't tight enough and it's sucking the air, but after checking everything seems to be tight. Does anyone know if this intake should sound so loudly, especially in acceleration?
When accelerating with accelerator pedal of 1/3-1/2 down it sounds like big V8, but in kick-down it becomes more like V10 or V12, but not a V6.
May be something wrong with the kit or installation?

I have the K&N FIPK genII, and I definitely think it is worth it.

Alex- What you are describing sounds normal. Light acceleration and cruising should sound like it did before the install. Harder acceleration should sound deeper.

My two cents about intake vs. exhaust. I really like the K&N FIPK because it only sounds deeper with hard acceleration. Normal cruising speeds and slower accelerations do not have any chane in their sounds. As for better mileage, I haven't seen it yet. Although perhaps my love of the deeper sound with hard acceleration, resulting in "stepping on it" too much, results in worse acceleration mileage. At least the mileage didn't get any worse!!!

I really like the way the exhausts sounds, based on the video and sound clips posted on this website. BUT . . . only with acceleration. I think the highway drone would drive me crazy.
 
I think I'm starting to like this sound. I just wasn't sure that it have to sound as a rally car. I used to drive Lancer Evo VI and Impreza WRC 555. But those were Rally Vehicles. I just didn't think that it should sound like this.
ksneubec, for how long do you have your Intake?
I was thinking of Borla or Magnaflow exhaust. I agree with you, 4Runner is more off-road vehicle then racing car, so exhaust should sound at acceleration but not in cruising speed, cruising should be the same.

I've had mine for about 2 months or so now. Seems like there is a bit more "ooompf" when stepping on the gas pedal. As for mileage, I haven't seen a change, but I tend to "step on it" a bit more because I like the sound.

From what I've "heard" on this board via sound and video clips, the magnaflow and borla will give you that highway drone.
 
Did you happen to get any baseline dyno figures with your stock system before making the mod to the K&N?

Without that, it would be near on improssible to notice/prove a 10hp difference (even if they were honest in their advertising).

I want to see some real world figures on these hp claims - I hope you have them, that would be really cool.

Sorry, but I didn't. I want to, but I couldn't find someone who can do it and then print it. Do you know who does it?

Obviously i don't know anyone in Toronto but....pretty much anyone with a dyno should be able to print out results for ya.

I did a search for you using the words Dyno Testing Toronto and came up with many hits...here's an example...

Dynopower Services, 325 Nantucket Blvd. Unit 3

Cost: $50 for 3 runs. If you are going to be doing a lot of tuning in between runs, the cost may be more expensive.

As far as the ones your mentioned above I will do a google for ya.................Midas doesn't have dyno equipment from what I can see at their website.

You might want to contact these guys - http://www.evolution-racing.com/ourshop.htm they seem to know their stuff. Not sure if the have a dyno in their workshop as their site doesn't say but they had a great article I read online about the use of a dyno to improve performance and provide results.

I have K&N Performance Intake for a week and I'm becoming to like the sound it does. As for gas mileage, I've done a test.
First, I was driving according to the sound. This means nice acceleration, first from the traffic light. Consumption: 14.4 l/100km --> 16.3mpg.
Second, I've tried to maintain my normal driving. Usually it gives me 13.6 l/100km (17.3mpg). Consumption with K&N: 12.1l/100km --> 19.4mpg.
P.S. My usual driving is 98-99% City with traffic.
This means that with K&N Intake I dropped consumption by 1.5l/100km (2mpg). This fact I think is good and showing that this mod was worth the money spend on it.
 
K&N FIPK & Gas mileage

I had a 1992 4runner V6 5speed. It had a K&N FIPK filter when I bought it. It was a high mileage vehicle
Tires were BFG 31X10's
I got 24 MPG consistently.
Gas was $1.50 p/g
Wish I still had it.

I now have a 1994 4runner V6 Auto, normal filter Cooper 31X10's and I'm getting 19 if I keep the tires just slightly over inflated, 2#'s.

I've read the post about filtering efficency with paper filters vs oiled filters and understand the risks.
Still it seems like a reasonable trade off to invest in the K&N.
At $3 per gallon it won't take too long to recover the cost of the FIPK. I probably won't keep the car forever
 
It would be nice to see some objective, reputable data on whether the intake really does something significant, or if it's "snake oil".
I tried a K&N filter on my 911 for a few years. It also promised better performance, but I never saw it on the track. I went back to OEM air filters.
The theory about getting more oxygen into the engine is great, but I think you might need a supercharger or turbocharger to really push that air through the engine.
Free flow exhausts have a lot more reliable data that they do, in fact, boost performance.
I find it hard to believe you can add 10% with a $250. mod.

Short Arm Cold Air Intake wouldn't give you 10% gain. It might give you 10 HP. 3-4% is more real, for 10% you'd need a chip tuning.

:) Same as I do. It feels extra power and sound is just amazing. It's sound of the engine and not that one which comes from fancy exhaust on civics. I like to show what the engine should sound like when someone on "neon" civic (which looks more like UFO then a car) pulls beside me. Ususally those drivers very surprised when they see that the truck like this with all off-road equipment can actually go and accelerate pretty fast...
 
Let's see a free K&N FIPK and a minimal $200 investment on a barely used Magnaflow cat back exhaust system equals a great investment for me. Sure I have a loud drone and my gas mileage has gone down slightly with my lead foot, but those are things I can live with. The drone keeps people from getting into my car, saving me gas with the lighter load which also makes up for the loss of MPG. In the end it's all good for me.
