KDSS clunk when turning left- is it Toyota documented?

I am going to my dealer for another issue and wanted to have the klunk in the KDSS system documented. Is this a known issue with Toyota at this point in time? I know they are going to tell me its normal but we all know that it is not. Is there anything that I can have them reference through Toyota to show that this is a documented issue on their end? I assume that there is not TSB out for it. Yes, I did a search but only found the complaints about the KDSS system and not any resolutions.

I thought most of the members on here found that it was a problem with the KDSS system. Everyone was looking at their build date and many had it prior to a certain date. I will have them look at it and see what they say then.

One guy in Poland, who has three posts, got his replaced... that's all. One guy was going to even sell his truck over the noise! The internet strikes again. While your noise COULD be the KDSS cylinder getting ready to fall off I highly doubt it. If you tell the shop it's the KDSS making a noise then that is probably the only thing they will check. What if it's the sway bar? A bushing? Better off telling them in the most general terms possible so they can check multiple components for the source. Hope this helps.

See what happens when misinformation gets repeated? Before long, people accept it as fact! The OP here was all set to go to the shop with a KDSS noise because he "read it on T4R.org" and that could severely limit what the shop did to troubleshoot the noise, leaving this guy frustrated if the noise is not identified and fixed. I know for sure that if you take something to a shop and tell them what you think it is, most times that is all they check because they assume you know what you are talking about. The thread in question was a bunch of guys that got it in their head it was KDSS noise because it was a TE. No identification, no somebody fixed it, no nothing. They even identified that the KDSS cylinder had changed for '14 and started checking build dates because they "assumed" that whatever change Toyota did was for sure the cause of this noise! Did they know what the change was? No. Never mind Toyota could have changed the KDSS part number because of: Material spec, hydraulic port location, internal seal change or even paint color would have changed the assembly number!
You are right. I cannot police the internet nor even this site or the 5th gen sub forum for misinformation. What I CAN do though is, when I read a post with seriously bad information that I know for a fact is a lie (CAI anyone?) I can post a rebuttal with correct information. Will feelings get hurt? Probably. Nobody likes when they are wrong, and very few have the balls to admit it, especially on the internet. Hackles get raised, people get defensive and usually an argument ensues. In the world of engineering that is an everyday occurrence. I guess other professions don't argue like we do lol. Now, all you "champions for the little guy" can read this and see what could happen when stupid multiplies. Rant over.

Take it to the shop. Tell them you have a "thump" noise coming from under the truck, maybe the front. Could it be the KDSS mount or cylinder? Sure, but it could be a multitude of other components too and I would want the shop to check every single one to get your issue resolved. Good luck.

On page six is when guys start talking about selling their trucks lol. I and several others tried to tell them it could be other components but apparently a "parts guy" at a dealership has knowledge that trumps everyone else! As you read please look for any real "facts" about the noise. One of the guys posting is a master tech too! Unreal.

When you can do this, take it in, and insist on driving with the tech aboard.

You must do this in order to prevent the "could not duplicate problem" diagnosis.

Do you have the ability to drive a new TE from this dealer? Driving a new one (hopefully no clunk) provides a benchmark against the "this is normal" diagnosis.

Along with misinformation being repeated, a lot of it has to do with people just not reading the available information completely; just reading the headlines. 2014 TRAIL EDITION WEIRD NOISE- KDSS TO BLAME… That's likely to get some attention. Most people, unless they started reading that thread when it came about are not going to sit there and read all 138 post. I'd like to think it's a generational issue (apparently not the case here), as my generation and more so the generation after mine do not place value in reading. They wan't information NOW, and just read the headlines and highlights.

Blaming it on KDSS is an easy "go to" option. And with the guy in Poland getting his replaced, i'm sure people will/have taken that information as fact and will try to put the squeeze on North America dealers. Maybe there is a noise, I don't know, I don't have a 2014 TE. My 2010, like most others does not make any noise that would be concerning. I'm certainly not a Toyota Fan Boi(boy?), this is my first and I already had the alternator replaced. But, I become greatly annoyed when people take misstatements, misinformation and disgruntled rumblings on the internet as fact; without reading all available information.

Analyze all available information then draw a conclusion based on fact, not writings from a few people on the internet. None (maybe one) of which have been able to successfully link it to KDSS…maybe

2010 Trail Edition funny noise from rear when going over bump… Maybe it's the shocks, maybe it's the springs, maybe it's the petrol tank or muffler… Oh wait, it was just the chain from the spare tire. Point is the noise can be many other things and there can be a simple solution.

But, maybe it is the KDSS, I guess we'll find out in a few years if a TSB is issued. That would put the matter to rest.
 
Thanks 1engineer for that info. When I was in the market for my TE I almost didn't buy one because of the supposed KDSS problem and do remember the build date info that someone posted so I thank you for straightening that out and it puts me at ease it could be something easy.

Unfortunately, I do not have the option of test driving another TE from the dealership here in Central NY as these are hard to find let alone one with KDSS. I actually traveled to Harrisburg, PA to buy this one as it was the closest to me.

Again, thanks guys for all the correct information. I will be taking it in next Monday and leaving it overnight. I will post on here what the clunking was.

Did you ever resolve this?
 
I have been noticing clunking from the front end of my 2011 with KDSS. It feels like something it rattling under my feet when driving over uneven roads (pretty much all roads in NYC).

When it gets warmer I will investigate more and probably start with replacing the bushings. Anyone have similar issues?
 
OP is in the house!! I still have the issue and they stated it was normal. It is only when turning left. Unsure if I want to call it a "clunk" per say but it's a noise and a feeling I get when turning left. I've had the truck almost 3 years with no issues with the KDSS so I guess it's "normal"

For what it is worth... I just changed all my sway bar bushings this past weekend and ALL noises/clunks are GONE. Truck feels tight and new again (the way it should be). If anyone has front end noises I would do the bushings first. This is a very easy job, I did it on the ground.
 
I find that just driving with a tech. and duplicating the noise for him has been the best way to resolve any noise issues. Its having to fix something that they can not reproduce or happens intermittently that's drive them/me nuts!
