Kenwood DNX7100 Installation

Grounding
I haven't actually tried grounding it to the head unit wires, since I hooked it up the right way first, and now i'm trying to get the DVD to play while the parking brake is engaged without having to pull the unit back out.
I guess my next step is to pull it out and try wiring it to head unit ground lead.
I'd hate to pull it all apart again only to have the VSC lights come back on again if grounding it there doesn't work.
I would have thought all ground wires eventually lead to the same place, but i guess the Toyota VSC sensors are somehow sensitive to variations...or perhaps i need to get my VSC computer looked at.

Wiring the unit was very simple for me. Just like the others I just wired the ground wire off of the TYTO-01 harness to the headunit parking break sensor wire and that's it! Didn't even had to splice any wire from the factory wires except the power supply wire to the factory antenna which I should've just used a wiretap for but whatever. Everything's working fine. Now I gotta locate the reverse wire so I can hook up a back up cam.

Ok, so resurecting this one............seems like no one here removed the factory Nav, which is what I will be doing. Does anyone know if the wire hareneses etc need to be changed to do so?

As Airbur said, leave it disconnected. It's always a good practice to wrap the ends of unused wires with electrical tape too, to prevent it from contacting metal.
The reverse wire is actually used by the navigation system as well. It uses this input to know the orientation of the vehicle as well if it is sensing movement through the gps antenna, or speed sensor. However, I don't know if it does more than just changing the direction arrow on the screen. May be more for an annoyance prevention than anything.

Faceplate / Engine Noise

I thought I was almost done this project until it came time to put everything back together. The faceplate went down in flames and now I need to get a replacement. Did your faceplate install after the dash went in ?
Has anyone come across a bracket / faceplate for the Toyota ? I have the 2005 SR5 that had the basic stereo (no JBL)
Another question - did you experience any engine noise ? I'm getting lots of it and most is coming from the right front speaker.

I'm am still using the faceplate that came with the unit. It doesn't fit perfectly and the sides are open...although you can't tell since it's dark in the corners. Recently I bought a Metra kit that was supposed to be designed for DD units to fit perfectly in the 4Runner Sport's opening....didn't work....the DNX7100 is too large and it didn't fit at all. At some point I'm going to have a shop create a fiberglass faceplate for it.
I didn't (and still don't) have any engine noise issues. Check your grounds. After I did this install, I replaced the rest of the 10 speaker system and added amps and a sub and no engine noise so far.

I used Metra kit from Crutchfield. Forgot the part number, put your vehicle in the info and it should give you the suggested part. At first fitting, I thought it was a bit big, but after a bit of fidgeting and bit of force, it's fitted perfectly. Basically 2 little plastic pieces that you screw onto the unit and then fit the unit in to the dash.

For those of you wanting a similar setup (I do) but are skiddish about cracking your own dash, I hit several different stereo install stores last week to get install quotes. Here is what I found for labor install only - no parts:
Local Best buy - $300 (they do not sell kenwood and have never installed it before in 4runner)
Local Circuit city - $400 (has experience with this type of install and will "accidentally" ground the pb sensor for me)
Car toys #1 - $710 (said could never get the tyto-01 to work so he just 'bypasses' the amp and no one notices cuz the head unit is "so good")
Car toys #2 - $980 (and said it was illegal to ground sensor and would NOT do it or allow me in the work area to "inspect")
Here is what I asked them to install:

I just called my local car audio place here and he said he had the sirius connect in stock so I'm getting the dnx7100 and all installed today.
I read someone else snipped the pb video wire and used a gator clip to ground it so I will probably try that instead of doing an "inspection" job as you mentioned.
If anyone has any tips on where to ground it I could use the advice, pics would be helpful. Ive read where a few people have grounded it but am not sure of what they were talking about.
Anyway, Ill post some pics even though it'll probably look just like airburs.

I love DNX7100 for it's installation being so simple. You simply join the park break wire to the ground wire off the harness. This was my first headunit installation ever and I did it with no problem. Except the fact that I did it in the middle of the night and it was dark, plus had a cop check up on me to see if I wasn't breaking into a car.

Got it in last night, the installer took care of the ground without me asking. I guess he assumed I would do it myself later. I love this thing!

The SIR-KEN1 has been discontinued...
The new parts are a universal sirius tuner... SCC1 ... made by directed. Then for kenwood you will need an adapter made by kenwood KCA-SR50. Theres a $20 price increase, and there isn't an input on the kenwood adapter to allow you to hook up anything else. But luckily most commonly used adapters like Bluetooth have an input on them.
I'm not sure why an installer couldn't get the tyto-1 to work... its pretty simple to hook up.
And most installers will take care of the ground wire as long as you aren't a 16 yr old kid... and you will tip. They are putting their job on the line... so throwing them $10-$20 tip is a good way of saying thanks! :bigok:
