Keys Lost!

Hey fellas,

I dunno what happened, I was out with a few friends, and happened to misplace my keys somewhere. In total, I lost my house key, which is easily replaceable, but the big loss was the Toyota key with the immoblizer chip, and an aftermarket VIPER alarm fob. Do you guys have any advice on how to replace the key on the cheap? I know the dealer can give me a new one, but my friend recently got charged $400 for a new set!

same thing happened to me but with a hylander. i went straight to ebay, got a genuine toyota replacement fob with programming. the key (no pun intended) is to buy from a place that will give you the programming instructions. some places do, while others will charge you additionally.

i'll try to find the place again but it was quite a while ago. Total cost was less than $30. I can't recall how i got another key.

I also checked online for the VIPER alarm fob, and it's $79.99! Unbelievable for 3 buttons and a chip haha.

Just wondering... Last I heard every 4Runner comes with Two "Master" keys and One Valet Key. Most alarm systems I have purchased come with at least Two remotes. From your post I gather either your wife/gf has the other alarm remote and "Master" key?

I also understand that in order to program a new "Master" key (not the key fob that locks/unlocks the doors) one must have the other "Master" key since the Valet Key cannot be used to program a new "Master".

I do remember quite vividly when I purchased my 4Runner that my salesman was VERY CLEAR that if I should every lose one of my Master keys that I should get it replaced immediately. He cautioned me that if I lost both Master keys it would cost about $2,300 to replace the ECU that controls starting the vehicle.

I would be very interested to see the programming instructions for a new master key that others here have mentioned. Last I heard, programming the keys (not the key fob) was not possible for an owner to do.

Well, I still have the other master key, but like you said, I'd rather have another master as a spare instead of a new ECU

I was looking around today, and found a website called streetkeys.com, which links to another site I can't remember off the top of my head. They'll cut me a new key (didn't say if it came with a chip for the immoblizer or not) for 60 bucks. I'll ring them up today and give you fellas info on if its programmable or whatnot.

Also, the viper fob I lost was the big annoyance. Their website lists it at. $79.99 for a replacement. Any ideas on finding a cheaper one?

Update:

Well, I'm sitting here quite amazed a good samaritan was able to track me down with my keys! The guy happens to live in my neighborhood and knows my father, so I am reunited with my keys

In any case, the key/alarm replacement website, keylessride.com, told me a replacement master key for the 2003-2005 4Runner can only be programmed by a locksmith or dealer, but they could cut the key itself if you ordered that option.
