Well I made it to wonderful Michigan. I feel like a frozen endangered species compared to socal.

I also have a few surprises from the 4runner. My starter went out the first day so I had to bump start it every say and just fill the tank with the engine running. Also when I arrived I checked underneath and it looked like someone had done undercoating on the 4runner while I was travelling. Seems that it was coming from the tranny. Might be extra fluid. I don't have any problems shifting into any gear including 4wd and it doesn't look like it's leaking. The diff is wet but I never cleaned it from when I re sealed it either. No engine leaks at all. Going to check fluid levels in the morning anyway or when I get time.

So the starter contacts were the only bad parts. I scraped the plunger and reinstalled. Kinda didn't want to start at first but she had been sitting for almost a month too. Not much else to report. I'm thinking the fluid all over the bottom is coming from the transfer case. I think it had too much. I'm going to keep an eye on it but I am getting a bicycle as my daily. School is a mile away and so is work so it doesn't make sense to light off the engine to shut it down 3 minutes later.

Proof I can fix stuff in the cold....but it sucks!

Nope. I am in the 3rd gen mafia though. You'll see me posting up from time to time. However I did trade my cb mount for a set of lights with the individual mentioned. Good guy and trade. Hopefully in the spring I can get my bumper and finally I will have the support for the ladder.

shoot, i meant to quote that jeepkiller guy, but like usual im not thinking straight. long work week haha. BUT i have to say that is a very impressive build going on. are you planning to do any bumpers/sliders in the future?

I do plan on doing bumpers and sliders but after I do the body and drivetrain lift. The body and drivetrain is next on the list. That lift will make way for the gas tank move and air system install. Going to run a York compressor and a f150 tank modified in the back. Rear bumper will be designed to protect it in case of a collision and to support the ladder and have a hitch in the center. Lots of stuff planned. Always short on cash and time. Family and education first. Then fun.

Amen. Mind if i steal that tank idea off you? the limits of the stock tank are a "little" disappointing.

Sadly it's the same size....it just happens to fit perfectly in between the frame rails in the back.

I don't mind at all though. In fact I think either [MENTION=76419]Doc2012[/MENTION] either cooked that idea up or he knows who did. The correct way to modify the tank though is to slice open the f150 tank and build it up just like the 4runner tank (transplant the pump and float) and then weld it up. Not for the faint of heart....or those who wish to stay DOT legal but if it is welded correctly there shouldn't be an issue.

I can't take credit for the F-150 swap. People have been doing that for a long time.

I can, however, point you in the direction of my brother, [MENTION=118207]midcoma[/MENTION], who did the swap and did it the RIGHT WAY, by welding everything in.

hey thanks. ill have to check his build out for some info. And DOT is why i hate certain parts of the US. Thank god they never bothered me here in S.C. or back in Detroit.

They never bothered me out in cali either but I had ky plates so.....anyway lol. I think when trucks get to be a certain age they stop caring so much.

my buddy in cali told me there was one place where 75% of cars coming through were 4runners and tacomas so they just do a "copy and paste" type of deal on the paperwork.:heh:

That wouldn't surprise me. Cali is so messed up its not funny. A lot of it looks good on paper but in practice.....they're so broke it's not funny. It takes around 6 months for you to get permanent tags. Until you get those you have the dealer tags on. There's not serialization to those. You're supposed to have your paper in the windshield.....but half the cars I saw don't.

Pretty easy really. If you let it bake on of course it is a little harder but not a whole lot sticks to it.

Well to update things it looks like I need a new starter. I fixed the contacts right and here I am a month later with a non-starting truck again. I checked everything I could think of. I am going to just go ahead and do the big 3 upgrade while I'm at it this time. At least this next repair should last longer than a month. I just didn't anticipate dropping another 200+ into repairs at this point. She has been so good to me. I am also on the edge of needing another battery so I will probably do that as well bumping the total to about 400 bones and a completely new starting system.

Since I am now in the land of salt and snow I am trying to devise a way to completely seal the terminals or cover them better to keep that junk out. Not sure if that's even possible actually. I was able to save a lot of money by fixing my HE washer on my own instead of paying for about 4 hours of labor to replace the basket.

I will also be including a post on fixing Yakima/Thule boxes as mine disintegrated during some high winds yesterday out on the road. At least that fix isn't 400 bucks. It's a mild 15.

Ok so it's been long enough. I've fixed the runner and done the big 3 upgrade. I only have a few pics and but it's really straightforward. You replace the positive and negative for the starter with an increase in size and then the same for the alternator and the negative for the battery.

I also had the wrong starter lol.

The size I went with was 0ga for the starter and then 4ga for the alternator and battery. Everything went together well and I'm pleased with the install.


I also fixed the cel code I had from yesterday. I needed to clean my maf. I will be redesigning my intake at some point from the ground up to make it a little more modular and make it seal better.....along with a drain cock so there wasn't a puddle in there. For now it's ok but fixing it shouldn't be too hard.

I ordered the parts for the intake. I am only redoing the outer shell, wire gland, adding a drain cock, and adding a support brace for the assembly. I'm hoping it goes smoothly. I will update with pics as it goes along.

I ordered one goodie for the truck but I've got to fix the front main and replace the oil pump. What was a seep has turned into a gush. I realized it before any damage was done

So I ordered all the parts for that....and a few other things that I have been wanting to get done.

I need to clean the intake manifold (it is 260k so I imagine they are dirty. I've been waiting for better weather to do all of this and in the past week I have been commuting mainly by bike

Then I go out to install parts and rip down the front end to this.....

Got some of the work done till I got to the crank. Had to order a special tool.

Pretty quick though. Took me about 45 minutes to get to the crank with draining the radiator.

The 3rz does a 2 piece fan shroud. Very user friendly

These clamps have paid for themselves already. I didn't drain the cooling system. Just clamped and drained the radiator.

After I get done I am going to attempt a writeup for those who question their diyness. There isn't a ton of info on this repair out there.

Currently in the middle of fighting with bad Phillips head screws. I have sworn more today than in two weeks. Still two more to go
