What made toyota great was reliable go anywhere engines NOT competeing with bloated American V8's. Big block 4x4 V8 engines from the 70's and earlier had less than 200HP BTW.
The 2UZ-FE V8 is one of the best engines ever made - period.

No doubt that it's a good engine. But if you look at the history of 4Runner engines, there are a bunch of them that could be considered one of the best engines ever made. Hell, even the 4.0L V6 might be considered one of the best ever made in the future. It's probably still too new to know for sure, but that doesn't mean it will not be considered one of the best ever.
Bottom line--- Toyota engines in general are probably the best engines ever made.
...Its not uncommon for a 2UZ to go 500K with a few timing belts and water pumps.....

Agree 100%
While true in general, specifically the 2UZ has seen success in quite a range of vehicles for over 10 years now. Its not uncommon for a 2UZ to go 500K with a few timing belts and water pumps, and from UOA's (not that they mean all that much) it hardly wears at all and is extremely easy on oil. I just saw an amazing 16K mile oil run in a Sequoia, and he had oil life left! I had an 06 with the 4.0 so I consider myself experienced and unbiased wrt both engines.
Exactly.
And if their V6 and smaller engines are so great, why aren't they used in Toyota's top of the line luxury SUV???
Small engines are fine for small vehicles and small folks. Us Americans tend to be a bit larger than you average Japanese person.
If you judge truck engines by peak horsepower alone, then there really isn't anything I have in common with you. What made toyota great was reliable go anywhere engines NOT competeing with bloated American V8's. Big block 4x4 V8 engines from the 70's and earlier had less than 200HP BTW.
Are we all forgetting how Nissan, to compete with Toyota dropped the 5.6 liter Titan/Armada engine in the Pathfinder....
Are we all forgetting how Nissan, to compete with Toyota dropped the 5.6 liter Titan/Armada engine in the Pathfinder....and you all are giving toyota sh*t for throwing a little 4.7 liter in the 4Runner, It was about time......to each there own i say, if you want a smaller engine or a bigger engine it should be your own choice.....we all have different preferences....so to the guy that buys the '10 4cyl power to ya, and the guy who buys the '10 v6 good for you, and for the people who want the '10 v8 hang in there, more than likely they'll release later on, give or take a couple years....
That Sequoia has the V8 made in the US with different internals too. The one from the US that goes into the 1st gen tundra and seq. dont have any internal iron parts.
The ones from Japan are in an entirely different league. As you said they are easy on oil. Thats why after 5k on dealer oil, its still dark gold at worst.
Nissan didn't drop the V8 in their Pathfinder. I just got a 2010 Pathfinder brochure a couple days ago. Still lists the V8 as an option in the brochure and it is still listed on Nissan's website for the 2010 model year.
