Kurtis T4R Build Thread

I hate you :cry2:

Not really, but you are building my dream runner. I wish I had the cash flow to crawl the runner still. This is literally my exact plans, just with 42s. What are your plans for the axles/steering? Chromolys? truss? full hydro? hysteer? and are you doing a triangulated 4 link, or what?

Thanks! As of right now the plan is (and it will probably change) to 4 link front and rear with full hydro. The 4 link in the rear will be dual triangulated and should be fairly easy since I have tons of room to work with. The front may be a little more difficult. The lowers will be triangulated while the uppers will have a minor amount or none at all. I have no plans for chromo shafts with the exception of the 35 spline stub shafts in the front. If I do break them I will upgraded as necessary. I have the go fast bug for the last couple years so I am hoping the ORIs will take the heat. However, if I can't them them tuned right I have not problem selling and ordering dual rate coilovers. This is just taking forever though...

That's awesome man. 60s and a 14b, you are probably good without chromos. My buddy has been running 37s for a while with no issues, and I believe he's bumping up to 40s or 42s here in a while. I've heard great things about ORIs, though I have no personal experience. May they do the trick!

I"m running them on one of the trucks. I'm sending them to the factory pretty soon to be re built. Right now they are riding better than before but until I can get them tuned the jury is still out. Just my .02 on them.

Waiting on parts so I've been working on another project.

For you nerds out there:

I upgraded to 16 gauge wire instead of 18 gauge. Toggles will be used for ARBs. Trigger will probably be used for the winch.

This thing is badass I need to see this in person. I seen you post on someones thread that your from whidby island ! Definitely not far from to go see this thing!

ORIs came in last week. 14" for the front and 16" for the rear. Running ORIs will allow me to skip running sway bars, limit straps, and bump stops. I am confident I will be able to tune them to perform like I want. If they don't perform like I need them to, I will not hesitate to replace them with Kings.

I ran the numbers in the 4-link calculator. I am pretty sure I have under estimated the center of gravity for the 4Runner. It is likely higher than 40" but it can be estimated to be at the top bolt on the bell housing. It being higher will give me a lower anti-squat which is what I am hoping for. I would of liked to see 65-80% A/S but 98% is just near perfect if I was building this suspension for a drag car as it the rear would not much much under throttle but will work just fine for this. Lower links are 40" long, uppers are 36". 10.5" of vertical separation at the axle, 5" at the frame. Lowers are at 50" of horizontal separation at the axle. Uppers are 3" at the axle. Horizontal separation at the frame for both uppers and lowers is 30". The frame height will be 24.5". I might bring it down to 23.5" as it would drop A/S down to 92% and give a lower center of gravity however, I am hesitant because I am shooting for 5" of up travel for the front and 6" for the rear and the oil pan really limits up travel in the front. I am planning on cutting the shit out of the oil pan to make as much room as possible and moving the drive train up 1". Of course the first thing you do after you make a plan is to deviate from it.

I also stepped down to a 37" tire. It will be more manageable on the trail. I might go with a 40" next go around.

All my brackets need to be drilled out to 3/4" since I am using 1.25" heims. I broke the pulley on my drill press so I am waiting on parts for it. It was warrantied, so I have that going for me, which is nice.

Right now I am waiting on parts for the drill press.

I'll be doing the shave kit once I get the gears and lockers.

Wheel base planned is 108-110". Width from tire bulge to tire bulge is 81" for the rear and 83" for the front.

Any progress?

Yes but nothing to really post about. I did some modifications to the geometry that should work a little better. All the frame side link mounts are in place. I removed most-ish of the extra stuff I don't care about, emissions stuff, ABS, power steering, etc. I need to burn in the rear axle. I just got a delivery of steel today so I am currently working on the t-case and transmission mounts and it will keep me busy for quite a while.

I feel like it's been down forever. I just want to beat the shit out of it.

Alright. Here's a small update for anyone that likes fabrication.

I did some frame notching in preparations for the front axle. I knew the frame might hit on the link mounts and/or axle. So I went ahead and pushed it up 3 inches. It's 3/16" wall 3x2". I also had to make custom motor mounts. While making custom motor mounts I moved the engine up 1". Every inch the engine is moved up is an inch of up travel gained. I will also be notching the oil pan if it nets me another inch. Gotta get the up travel so this doesn't ride like ass.

Make fun of my paint job and I will make fun of your stock painted wheels.:50cal::50cal:

Gobs of clearance to the new motor mounts.

I also got the belly cross member going. I used some beefy stuff here. It's 1/4" wall 1.75" DOM and Chromo couplers. I got the T-case mount from TMR Customs out of CA. Great products. I will get to the transmission mount soon enough.

The would be transmission mounts. Also custom.

Plated the frame a little to keep it strong.

I have the rear figured out. I have link material. For now I am sticking with 1/4" x 2" DOM round tube. In the future I will likely go with chromoly but this will do for now. The numbers on the rear are looking really good. I am very excited to see how it handles.

I also prepped the rear of the frame to be clearance similarly to the front. This is so I can get the ORIs as wide as possible on the axle without jeopardizing the frame integrity.

I laugh now because I have built nearly as much of this frame a Toyota originally did. There is not 1 factory cross member left in this thing.

Lastly, a snorkel for you pavement pounders.

I have a metric shit ton of parts on order right now. Once they come in this should start moving pretty fast. ARBs, gears, PSC Full Hydro kit, and a ton of other stuff is on order. I am excited to wheel this thing again. It is going to be ridiculous. And I am tickled pink.

Holy crap on a cracker.

Are you having anyone help you with this? I'm literally down the street from you. Not that I'm begging for attention or anything........... . . .. . ......

All me baby. Stop by sometime. If the shop doors are up, I'm working on the truck.
