Inspired by Pawl's Hilux Surf thread, I thought I'd post up my new (to me) Hilux Surf as well. Seems like there are more and more of us on the boards!

1996 Hilux Surf SSR-G, 3.0 Turbo Diesel with factory intercooler.

-ARB OME Suspension
-ARB Safari snorkel
-Jaos Excel 2 16 inch alloy wheels with matching spare
-265/70r16 BF Goodrich AT tires
-External trans cooler

Sweet rig! Thing looks wicked clean too. I was gonna say it's weird you had the snorkel on the drivers side, then I saw the right hand drive and I was like "wait WTF?" and then I became smart

snivilous - Ha yeah, the RHD a day or two to get used to. Now when I jump in an LHD vehicle, I mix up the turn signals / wipers and the lights / rear wiper.

IanB - I'm on the West Coast of Canada

ranbar02 - I'm still on my first tank of diesel still so I'm not totally sure. The previous owner said he got around 100km (60 miles?) per 9L of fuel. I'll be happy if I can hit that too..

That's awesome, I miss driving my RHD vehicles. I wish I could buy the Hilux Surf rear hatch + swingout tire carrier!

Also, where did you buy the car? Did you buy it from a Japanese auction house/website or did you just get it off an importer?

Sweet rig! I'd be happy getting 26MPG too! Hell, my Corolla gets just over 30 and that's no fun to drive!

I'm assuming that's the intercooler smack-dab in the middle-rear of the engine bay? So that means you have a functioning hood scoop? Do you mind taking some pics of the whole turbo setup?!

Freak - I actually bought it from a guy here locally. It was imported though a company in Vancouver. The previous owner took great care of it, but in the end he really wanted a Hilux pickup instead.

Jeff - Yeah, that's little intercooler right in the middle. I'll try and update this thread with some engine pics for ya.

When I had my Surf my best tank was 23.8mpg (US gallons), and averaged 19.5 or so. That was with 265/75/16 Duratracs, and lights on the front, window visors, no intercooler. I'm sure stock size tires and an intercooler would only help it out. Loved that truck!

My truck is a non-intercooled model and on my way from Vancouver to Winnipeg, I was easily getting 9L/100km. On the stretch from Golden BC through Banff and Calgary, then filling up in Medicine Hat (which, if anyone can tell, is a fairly lengthy drive right there) I only used 3/4 of a tank and got 8.6L/100km. thats 27 mpg I think? My truck has 267/70/16 (I think, now I have to go check) Blizzaks on it.

Do the diesel models without an intercooler have a hood scoop? I saw a couple Surf's in New Zealand that were diesel but were missing the hood scoop.

From factory, only the intercooled models got the hood with the scoop.

Did the Flip the wiper and turn signals on the surfs? So far only my LHD Land Rover has the flipped controls, and every RHD vehicle ive driven has had normal wiper and blinker stalks.

since the surfs are legal in Canada are you able to source repair and maintenance parts easily? since the dealer doesnt carry these parts as the vehicle wasnt offered in the canadian or US market.

Turn signal is closest to the driver's side window on both my RHD's (both Toyotas), and I'm pretty sure every RHD is the same way.

Most parts are the same as 4runners, engine parts can be bought out of the UK from parts guys that speak English, there are numerous sources in Canada that stock common maintenance bits, or if you're a bit more resourceful you can have parts brought in directly from Japan or Australia (also English 1st language source). You need to plan ahead a bit, and carry an inventory of things like oil/fuel filters that you'll use often, but it's not a big deal.

the hilux surf hood is the same as the sport scoop hood we have here in the us i believe except the scoop insert is different for intercooler turbo diesel models. you can actually trim the us Scoop insert to have an opening in it.i did this with my hood.
