ladder rack

Guys

I have a 2006 SR5 with the luggage rack and a spoiler. Both factory. I need to use my 4runner for business and need to carry a ladder on top. Can this be done with the luggage rack or is there some bolt on accessory I can use to go on my luggage rack. I dont want to remove the luggage rack and install a ladder rack. I also can not afford a truck right now and need to make this work but do not want to damage my 4 runner in any way.

thanks

I've carried a ladder on my rack with no problem, but you'll probably want to add something to the crossbars to keep from scratching them.

The hardest part is working out some easy system to keep it tied down.

I have the Yakima Low Rider with crossbars and the Land Shark kayak saddles. The saddles not only work for the yak but they work great for ladders too. I carried a 16 foot A frame up there with no issues. I think you can mount the Land Sharks with some mighty mounts too. Check out the Yakima site. When it's all said and done though it may just be cheaper to buy a fold up ladder.

The cross bars are fine for securing a ladder. Be careful though with the spoiler because the bars will not raise the ladder high enough to clear it.

I had a fold up ladder once and returned it. it was a pain in the ass to open and close.

Yes i was noticing that. That's why i was looking for an attachment to mount on the crossbars to lay the ladder on. i'll look at the yakima site.

for a cheap solution that will lift the ladder up over the spoiler, and will also protect the rack from scratches - try the foam pads made for carrying a canoe. Something like these at link - available at most sporting stores, Walmart, Target, etc. They are made for clipping over the canoe gunwales - should clip over the ladder verticals in same way. Little disclaimer - I have not done this myself, but occurred to me when I read your post. Oh, and I'll state one thing maybe obvious: will also need two good binder straps, one at each rack up and over the ladder, with at least one wrap around a rung so ladder can't slide forward under emergency breaking.
