I've contemplated the idea of mounting the spare tire to either a Gobi or Baja rear ladder for some time now. I've searched the best I could ...not going to dig too deep if nothing obvious pops up. Trying to weigh all the variables right now as to why this would or wouldn't work.
YAY
1. Ladder designed to support the weight of the average dude.
2. Pretty simple fab could make a mount to attach the spare tire.
3. I think it would look like the cats meow.
4. $$$ Saving option for those that don't/can't want, need, afford Rear Bumper.
5. Still easy to open rear hatch...no swing out.
NAY
1. Constant load on the ladder might wear out the mounting points prematurely.
2. Rear door struts definitely couldn't handle the weight..but seems fixable.
3. Almost eliminates the use of the ladder.
4. No real way to tell how it will handle rough road conditions. Lots of trial and error in an initial build.
Anyone willing to contemplate the idea, shoot it down horribly, or possibly make me feel like a genius would be great. Just StormBraining here.
Thx
