If you haven't been there before, plan to stop at the Hill AFB Air Museum in Ogden when you get to the SLC area. It was the first time that I got to see a B-17 close up. To make the visit even more special, I got to talk to a WWII B-17 veteran ball turret gunner who was a volunteer working at the museum. As excited as I was about seeing the aircraft, talking to this gentleman made the entire visit worthwhile. This was about 10 years ago. I hope that there are some veterans that are able to volunteer.
I just got my skids on today, looking for an excuse to bang em up a little. When do you think you'll come through AZ? Sedona is only 30 miles from Flagstaff, has some amazing scenery and supposedly has some amazing trails too. Depending on when you'd be near there I'll try to meet you there, already have some trails mapped out from the guidebook.

Sorry man! This is what sucks about only checking in after I get to a stop for the night. I just left Greenville a couple hours ago. I met an old army friend and we had dinner at Smoke on the Water. Excellent food, but too loud to have a decent conversation. Which was a shame because we were trying to get caught up from not seeing each other since 1985.
And I may miss Lone Star this year. Either that or I may have to cut my western swing short to make it. But right now the Jambo will be sacrificed first, because I only live about 200 miles from there and I can make the next one.

You get some trails ready and I'll try to make it. But I only have factory skids, so be gentle. Keep an eye out for when I get closer. Just remember mine still has to get me home! :naughty:

I met Justin - [MENTION=121966]kalonji[/MENTION] for breakfast this morning and we chatted over coffee. Got another good shot after and I went on my way to the Fort Sumter tour. Thanks for getting up and meeting me Justin! Lol :becky:
Rolled up into the ferry parking lot next to the USS Yorktown museum, so I had to get another shameless shot.
Approaching Fort Sumter. It is really in much sadder shape than I had original thought. Not from lack of maintenance, but from the pounding it took during the Civil War In its prime the walls measured 50' high from the low water line. Shelling from the war ground almost 20' of the top of the walls all the way round, and they were just never built completely back up.
A pair of guns at Fort Moultrie. It is in better condition both because it is on the mainland, and because it was used as a coastal artillery fort until after WWII.
AND I arrived in Asheville at about 10:30 tonight.
Tomorrow some Blue Ridge Parkway shots!

I will be in Ashburn VA at some point, not sure which day the job will be but looking like Monday or Wednesday. I'll try you on your mobile when I'm out there if you are still nearby. The Air and Space Center is near Ashburn.

I wish I would have seen this thread earlier. Today is the last day of the Auto Fair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. I had to work it the last two days and saw some really impressive cars.
If you like NASCAR, you should make the short drive to Lexington, NC and see the Richard Childress Racing museum (Richard Childress Racing - About Us). It's only about an hour North of Charlotte, and just a few minutes off I-85, plus some of the best BBQ in the world (yes, I said it) is in the Lexington area.
I'm not sure if I'm going into work tomorrow, but if I do and you'd like to meet for coffee let me know.

I will throw in my recommendation to stop by the Udvar Hazy Air & Space museum. It is a great place, a lot of aviation history, really big place.
Also, the USMC museum is something you should stop by and see as well. It is right off I-95 by Quantico, it is really recommended to stop by there, an outstanding place.
Believe me, you will not feel you have wasted your time with these two museums.

Kids first is my motto. I'm glad mine is now 31. Lol
I would love to see a Lacrosse game, but not in Maryland. What time is her game? I might get a wild hair and show up. If you're in Ashburn on Wednesday that is when I plan to see the new wing of the Air and Space Museum. Keep me in mind.

I just checked into the Days Inn in Mooresville. Plan to do Childress Racing museum and DEI tomorrow. If you're near that exit I'm up for coffee in the morning since they don't open until almost noon. I did the NASCAR Hall of Fame on my way through Charlotte today.

I didn't get any pictures in Asheville, today. I just started up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Thanks for the recommendation. It's a beautiful drive, but I think I'm a couple weeks too early for most of the spring growth.
This is at almost the top of Mount Mitchell (the highest mountain along the parkway). I didn't make the 5 minute walk to the peak. If you've seen me in the earlier pictures you'll understand why. At sea level is one thing, but that's a climb at over 6,000'. :faint:
After Mount Mitchell I cut over to Marion on State 80, which was a very enjoyable twisty little 2 lane for about 12 miles. I did the GoPro on the hood for that on, but it will take so long to edit and upload the video it will have to wait until the trip is over.
I realized when I hit Charlotte that I could probably take in the NASCAR Hall of Fame today, so I went ahead and swung by there before finishing the day in Mooresville.
And now you know what my member name means. I was a diehard Dale Earnhardt fan for most of his career. The 3wb was what I put on my dirt car as an open admission that I was a wannabe.

No worries brother. My oldest son ended up getting sick and had to take him in yesterday so I would have missed ya anyway. Safe travels and don't blame ya for cutting the Jambo out. Tons of places to explore out west.

since you're into museums, the General George S. Patton museum in Fort Knox KY is a great one to see - otherwise i recommend stopping at Red River Gorge in KY. there are some no permit OHV trails to explore, as well the hiking trails and scenery this time of year is fantastic. be warned though, there arnt any publically available maps - its all locals word of mouth travel through the trails and remembering land marks. if you are interested some forums and google searches can turn up some topography maps of the area.

Crap, I was going to suggest a quick trip up to the summit of Mt. Evans.
It's a hop, skip and a jump from Denver but at 14,240 ft not generally a good idea for people who are not acclimated to our altitude.
My wifes niece was here a few years ago and we took them up there and she ended up puking all over their rental van. LOL
But a beautiful view and it can be 100F in Denver and if you are up there looking down on the city it can be 40F or less at the summit. Mother Nature is in control, without a doubt.
