Last minute Suspension Advice.....

Long story long.... I was looking through some threads today about suspension installation and I noticed a couple people have the icon setup with the Sway away rear coil springs, I think a few people have suggested that the ICON rear coils are too stiff? I do not see too much additional info on this subject besides briefly in Harper's build thread....

So hopefully Harper or Mick1 will have some input since they are running this set-up.... but since I need to call and possibly adjust my order first thing in the AM I will take any and all advice out there:

So why sway away rear coils with icon set-up?
Those with icon stage 2 is it too firm?

(I assumed one reason to get a complete set/kit is that it is specifically designed to function together... And someone way smarter than me picked the best components to function together... you know the measurements of pounds and torque divide by mass and travel subtracted by the flux-compactor, it's all very technical I'll let 1engineer explain it to you, I don't have time ... I do not plan on carrying a lot of equipment in the truck and my english bulldog Chunk doesn't weigh too much, so does it all depends on how much gear you want to carry without the rear end looking saggy? And I also don't want the passengers in the back seats to feel like they are live stock in the back of a pick up truck.)

:trophy:Let me also add that the guys over at Metal tech are great and super patient with my 5 hours of questions... And that I also emailed 3 other companies on Cyber Monday to find the best price and one vendor came in $800 higher on their quote than what Metal tech was charging.

I have Icon springs in the back with no issues at all. I don't consider them too stiff by any means. In fact, when I lost my shock on a trail in the middle of nowhere those springs carried me 100 miles without a shock over rough terrain.

EDIT: Also, Metal Tech is awesome. The only other vendor that beats them is High Tec.

It's not the stiffness of the Icons that swayed me, as they are about the same and reported to be only 5in/lbs more then the SAW's .218lb vs 213lb with stocks about 180 -190 or so. It was more the lift height that I was shooting for with the SAW's reported to be 1.5" and the Icons at 2". However ,from mine and other peoples reports it's more like 1.75" and 2.25" respectively once they've settled.

With the rears SAW's at 1.75" ,then the front Icons can be backed off and not have to be set at the full 3" (I have mine at 2 1/2")to achieve the 3/4 "-1" rake I desired and still have plenty of room to get it in my garage even with rack/lights up top . With the front Icons lowered there is also a little less spring pressure on the CO and thus a little softer ride and a better cv axle angle .

My 2 cents and YMMV!

Thanks for your input Limamike!

I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss a thread somewhere breaking down the major differences... Like only use icon rear springs if you plan on adding addtional weight i.e. roof rack, rear awesome tire carrier bumper, BBW or haul a lot of heavy gear or tow.... and maybe use sway away rear coils if you do more highway driving and don't plan on adding too much additional weight....

Metal tech is great... And us west coast folks all wish we had a High-Tech aka bobby

Harper thanks for chiming in, that is one of factors that I did not consider, rear height... I thought the debate was all about the ride quality and about the amount of weight you could carry without effecting the lift and sagging.

I see how far so many people's trucks have come and how much money is spent when they learn from their mistakes and have to change out a part, that if they would have researched more they would have maybe got it closer on the first purchase... Great example I researched my tire selection on here for weeks read every post on pros and cons and decided 265's duratrac were the way to go, no rubbing issues, better mileage with factory size and now I have 265's that have 3000miles that I am going to have to eat a lot of $$$ to replace with 285's to fill the wheel well up once I do the lift :ybrick: but you have to learn from your mistakes?

WAIT TILL THE 6th GEN... WELL MAYBE MORE LIKE 7TH OR 8TH GEN ROLLS AROUND I WILL HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT BY THEN:party:

Rear springs aren't terribly expensive so if you aren't happy with one swap them out. I am sure there will be someone that is piecing together a kit that will take them off your hands.

I myself am on my second set of rears due to the extra weight I have added. Easy swap, took crazydubman and I about an hour with a lot of b.s.ing.
