Once I got that side a fair bit off, I just put my fingers under the edge and pulled. I did have to heat up the glue once or twice to make it easier. It was a little intimidating to do, but it worked out great, and I like the results. I tried to be real gentle when pulling the emblem off as I really didn't want to break the thing. If I did it over, I would have used a thin piece of cloth to protect the emblem when using the pliers. Even still I was able to sand down the area that got scratched, and after painting, you cant tell.
As far as painting, I just lightly sanded the emblem and used the Krylon Plastic Paint. I wasn't going for a real glossy look, so I didn't clear coat it.
Good luck.
How has it held up in the weather? Is it okay without the clear coat?
