Late(r) model OEM wheels on 1st Gens

There is a similar thread on ‘mud, but I’m thinking there are a few guys here who have done this. I’m looking at put 16s or 17s from either 3rd Gen T4R or 2nd Gen Taco on my ‘89. Looking for pics, and info on what spacers or hub changes you needed to do. Ideally, I’m looking at what bolts right up without modifications.

Im assuming most of them will bolt right up given they have the correct tire size on them that'll fit your rig. Go check out [MENTION=25058]ChildrenOfBodom[/MENTION] 's build thread of his turbo 4Runner. He has 3rd gen wheels on his first gen and they look great:thumb3:

I assumed most would as well, but the ‘mud people seem to think it’s “hit or miss”. Pun intended. I’ve read that thread, and it looks like those aren’t spaced out. Thanks Eugene!

My favorite is the 16-inch "Toyota 5-Star" from 3rd gens. Plug and play on first gen.
Classy design that does not look busy.

Unfortunately, bigger rims also mean more expensive rubber to give you same tire outer diameter.

These are my first choice as they look amazing on KLFs red ‘85 extra cab (build on mud), and my second choice are the 5 (10?) spoke Tundra/Sequoia 17s. Those would let me run the 255/75-17 BFG muds that came oem on Rubiclones. These tires are all over Craigslist for about $250 for a set of 4 with 70% ish tread. I could easily buy a couple of sets and be done with tire buying for a few years. They are like a 32x10.50.

I have ran the 17" Trail Edition 4runner/FJ wheels. No spacer or modification necessary.

I currently am running the 16" TRD Tacoma wheels. The front passenger BARELY touched my tie rod. I put on some 1.25" spacers and no problems, i even think it looks better! I have since blacked out the machined portion on the Taco wheels and love it even more! I'll probably stay with this setup for a while.

Looks great with them blacked out! I had my Land Cruiser at the dealer the other day and noticed some brand spanking new TRD wheels with oversized KO2s on them. Would love those on the ‘Runner, but I didn’t even bother asking the price... didn’t want to throw up!

My source for 16s turned out to be a total dick head (and he’s trying to make a business out of selling 4Runner parts!), and my apparently available sets of 17” rubber have also come up as non-existent...

I've got a set of 2008 16" FJ Cruiser wheels I'm about to put on. They bolt on just fine but I haven't got tires on to really see if they're compatible. Hopefully I'll find out soon!

I ended up with a set of ‘05 ish Tundra double 5 spokes like I posted a pic of above. I had a shop mount 255/75-17 BFG MTs on them today. That experience reinforced why I do as much of my own work as I can... they broke 1/2 of my center caps, the trans shifter cover, and it all started out with seeing the clown undoing the nuts on my locking hubs to remove the front wheels!! What kind of idiots are allowed to work on other people’s vehicles??
