Lateral Control Rod tough to re-install

I put some new springs on the rear of the 92 and i cannot get my lateral control rod back in. Has this ever happened to anyone? its off by about 1/2" and even with ratchet straps and come alongs i cannot manage to seat that rod on the bushing or line the hole up on the frame. I removed the springs and still no luck in getting that rod back in.

I know tolerances are tight on suspension links, but this is a little rediculous. It took me 45 minutes to change springs, but ive wasted 3 hours trying to line this bar back up.

Are you talking about the panhard bar? or the swaybar?

What type of springs did you put in? Pictures are always nice

The lateral control bar is the bar that goes from the axle to the frame on the rear of the axle. it passes from the drivers side to the passengers side frame. They are some moog springs. I've tried refitting with them out .. in other words the springs are not the issue. The sway bar and shocks are disconnected. This thing is sitting on my lift so ive got pretty good range of motion and able to really jack with it if i have to. I just want to know why. I took alot of pictures but they are on my phone and i dont have itunes on this computer.

From the drivers side axle to the passenger side frame? That's the Panhard.

My '86 is leafsprung, so I'm shooting in the dark here, but the '92 has a panhard and trailing arms, right? Do you have a bent trailing arm locating the axle wrong?

according to the fsm this is the lateral control rod in toyota technical terms. i agree it may be a panhard bar, but this is apples to oranges guys. i've replaced several suspensions and leaf sprung vehicles and this has never been an issue. lets get some real info here

Ok, fine, it's a "lateral control bar" in the FSM. You obviously knew what Hyde was asking, so why be difficult?

And what "real info" do you want? If it doesn't line up, something is bent and/or the axle is located wrong. I'm assuming you'd notice if the panhard was bent, so I'd look next at the trailing arms(?). If that checks out, raise the axle. The panhard bar describes an arc, so bring the axle high enough (if it's short) or low enough (if it's long) and it will line up.

I had to use a jack after I installed my springs to get the PANHARD bar back one....so I jacked it up until I could get it back on.

I had the same issues when rebuilding the rear control arms and lateral unit. I loosened everything up , then got the bolts through, but it was still exceedingly tight(especially with urethane bushings). It seemed to help to set up a large metal bar to help push the rods in place for aligning the bolts through the holes. The last one (of course) was the only challenge.

got it back in on my lunch break. I had to jack up the axle near the the differential and then hooked up a large ratchet strap to the shock mount and to the passenger side frame rail. it took the right angle to get the bar to line back up but it eventually went back in.

on reassembly i was using my impact and broke off 2 lug bolts. eeeek. anyone replaced those on a 92?

yea easy to replace pull off the rear drum hammer out the broken stud and get 2 new ones as well as one extra lug nut. put about 10 washers on the new stud and tighten one of the old lug nuts on till it gets pulled through. use the same lug nut to pull both through and then toss that one.

Well I took a ratchet strap, hook one end to the passenger side frame and the other to the drivers side of the axle. Tightened the ratchet up until the eyelet on the track bar and the hole in the bracket lined up. Also you can have someone push on the bumper until the holes are lined up.

Edit: Now that I have read through the whole thread like I should have to begin with. You did just that. It's 5:50 in the morning, forgive my ignorance.

I ended up breaking 5 lugs, I won't ever use the impact on my lugs again. It's a snap on lithium 600 ftlb mamajamma. It's all back together And ready to play in the snow. I'll upload any pics if you guys want this as future o.e.

U can definitely tell why i decided to get this done. I was pretty slammed in the rear and towing my duck boat around is about the max load this thing will do without riding on bumpstops. I also decided to change brake rotors in the front, talk about a pain. While i was in there i replaced bearings and pads. If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask.

its a long process just to change a rotor, and i feel like the fsm torque values are off. there is way too much preload at those values and i feel like that could actually affect mpg and bearing life. I went with what i felt was tight but still able to actually turn the wheel.
