Latest Mod: Voice Command factory steering wheel switch

Last night I updated my 4Runner's steering wheel functions. Finally the right side doesn't look so left out! I added the factory "push for Voice Command" for my 4th generation NAV (Solara). Works great, installed in less than 10 minutes (2 torx screws, 1 phillips, and that's it.) There are a few threads around on this already. No need to run wires back to the NAV, you just plug in a 4" factory harness from the left side switches to the right side switches.

The right bank of switches is a Land Cruiser part.. The grey/black plastic is a perfect match for the 4Runner.. but of course the button is green backlit. No worries.. it is just a SM-LED. I just need to figure out the voltage and size.. when back to sodering (i'll save that for another day... green is fine for now.)

I believe so. The 05 comes with the 3rd generation toyota/denso nav, but i believe it still supports Voice commands. You need to purchase the Toyota Microphone (do a search, there are a few threads on it, about $50) When you plug the mic into the NAV unit it enables the Voice Commands.

Can anyone confirm enabling voice commands on a 3rd Gen NAV system?

yes. 05 camry has right side steering wheel control for "MODE" and "RESET". this is to click through your mpg, temp, etc. on your center console.

The 05 Landcruiser using some new Bluetooth/phone buttons. Since we haven't figured out how to add BT to the 3rd or 4th Gen NAV (even though the software supports it)... they are not much use.

The 2 remaining blanks are backlit (if you remove the blank cap) and there is a board with the SM-LED and a microswitch. they are wired up and ready to go, so if you wanted to do some custom work you could probably conver them to "buttons" and put them to use (but t would be a lot of work and I am not even sure you would be successful.)

That is the same question that I had. When I re-read the post, I was under the assumption that gregtay ordered a different assembly for those buttons. I have the same truck (03 Sport), and my wheel has just one large plasitc insert where those buttons are. I would not be able to add the voice button without ordering a different piece. The only thing is I thought that would be a hard job to do!

I have a 05' 4Runner with the factory nav and have added the mic and steering wheel voice button. I have also replaced the LED's on the switch from green to orange. The LED is not as bright and a slightly different color than the other switches on the steering wheel. But im anal and others woulden't notice it, its not that big of a difference to tell. There are 3 more buttons that could be on this switch board. They are all labeled "voice," "mode," "reset" and "cancel." I haven't tested it out as to if it would work to change the MPG, temp, etc. display since I thought it was for the laser cruse control. I just bought extra buttons for the righthand side of my steering wheel. I have an '05 4Runner ltd with nav.

I'm not trying to enable voice though.

I want to use the buttons to mute my installed radar detector and to control a built-in motorola bluetooth handsfree set.

So I bought the gray set of buttons from an 05 landscruiser (with bluetooth phone). The gray is a perfect match, FYI. I found a dealer who said I coud return it unopened if it didn't match.

I'm not going to hook it up with the standard cable; I don't want it controlling the nav or anything.

I plan to directly wire to the buttons and modify them to control a tiny keychain wireless transmitter in the wheel to control these functions.

The Toyota part is 84244-60061-B0

It has
1 - rocker switch; call pickup and hangup
2 - middle blank non-button. But looking inside, I think the buttons are there. I THINK I can modify it to be another rocker switch like #1. (or volume on the other side)
3 - the nav voice input button.

Thought this might help since toyota's diagrams don't show details... The trick is to find an actual vehicle that has the buttons you want in it and either
1) steal them (kidding)
2) use the vehicle's VIN at the parts desk to get the right part.

Note that the grey ("stone?" = B0) color from the landcruiser exactly matches the 4Runner. (not true with some other models)

Soes ANYONE know what model # is on the front of the Navigation systems in the 2005 Landcruisers? My 2005 4Runner is E7005.

So is the BT hardware a module that plugs in on the landcruiser or built into the nav unit?

Here's the disassembled switch assembly (see part # in prior post)

Switches:

1 - rocker bluetooth on/off hook

2 - blank. However 2 switches exist under here, corresponding to "disp-on" and "disp-off" on the board

3 - voice single button. pressing this makes it announce "voice recognition session finished" (I have no mic)

There's also contacts for switch "acc". Doesn't do anything.

If I can't figure how to add a bluetooth module controlled by this nav system (unlikely unless the landcruiser uses the E7005 too) then I'm going to use the switches as follows to control the mute on my built-in radar detector and the new motorola bluetooth kit.

I'll cut the circuit board traces to each switch and wire into them directly, then use them to switch the buttons of the 4 channel keychain remote control

This will let me get 6 channels of programmable relays at the receiver somewhere outside the steering wheel. I could have probably encoded the buttons and intercepted the commands before they went to the nav system but didn't want to mess with it.

This part comes with GREEN LEDs, so I need some orange LED surface mount. (voltage drop across them measures 2.0 volts)

Here are two of the buttons removed.

The left one is the bluetooth rocker. When it rocks, it pushes down on one of the two white pins, which press a membrane switch.

The middle blank has plastic channels in it to keep it from rocking, but notice it still has the center pivot (and the membrane switches underneath!). I'm pretty sure I can Dremel-remove parts of it so it can rock one or both directions. I bought #10 plactic screws from Home Depot to serve as pins (need a little sanding and grease to glide)

So this could give you 4 additional switches plus the voice one. (if you didn't want the BT-marked buttons, maybe you could buy the '04 model without the BT buttons? I don't know if it has switches under both blanks...)

It makes sense that for a cell phone capable system, the nav system would use the voice output channel and the voice input using the microphone system (I just installed mine with a foot switch in addition to the stick-on PTT). There are some open connectors on the back of the Nav HU that OEM Value identified as unknown! I think this needs to be tracked down through a Toyota stealership! I'll let you know what I find out.

this has been discussed before....either on a thread here or on siennaclub.org...can't remember which. the end result was someone tracked down that the navs use the same/similar software, but that the nav unit we've been getting from oemvalue is missing the "blue tooth hardware" to actually do the connection. But since the software was there, lots of ppl wanted to know if they could get the hardware. It looked like (at that time) that it wasn't gonna be doable. IIRC, there was someone in the know who said that the units with bluetooth had the bluetooth component INSIDE the actual head unit. dunno. I'll see if I can drag up the old threads...of course, a lot can change in a year, so...let us know what you do find out...

I would like to know if those of us T4R owners who did NOT have steering wheel controls when we purchased our vehicles can ADD them on now by ordering the left control module and harness that runs to the radio. I have upgraded to the Scion HU and would like to add the steering wheel controls. I saw a pic from someone who changed to a woodgrain steering column and it appeared as if one could add the control module to any of the 4 Runner models wheel.

Also, the bluetooth through the Nav system is soooo cool. I might have to spring the 2k for the Solara system to put in my Runner. Of course, that will come after the coilover shocks lift.

general consensus about blue tooth (if you read the linked threads) is that bluetooth isn't available for the solara/camry/sienna nav...
