I change my oil no later than every 4,000 miles. I try to stick closer to every 3,000 because I only do around 14,000 miles a year. Maybe I am a little to cautious, but I don't feel comfortable sticking to what the book says, every 5,000 miles. Looks like it pays off to change your oil sooner than later!!

I did my first change at 1500 miles and have done the others at 3750 mile intervals. This is the interval Toyota previously recommended for severe service. I don't come close to severe service so by using Castrol GTX 5w30 and Toyota filters I am sure I am in great shape. Plus based on all of the oil analysis on www.bobistheoilguy.com the Toyota 4.7 V8 is very very easy on oil. I am planning on going to Mobil 1 5w30 and 5K mile OCI. I might do a oil analysis after running the Mobil 1 for a few changes. Very interesting oil analysis. Just shows how good Toyota is at building engines and how good Mobil 1 oil is. I can promise you this. If I had been using regular dino oil for 128k miles my engine would not be in the shape it's in now. Mobil 1 and other "more expensive" oil keeps your engine alot cleaner. I have removed the oil pan, valve cover, I know what the inside of this motor is like. And that is why I will continue to waste my money.

Then when the warranty is up switch to synthetic oil and run it 7500 miles. The synthetic should clean up any deposits and by the time you got to 128K miles it would be the same as the engine that used synthetic since 5K miles.

Suggestion, wait for a couple oil changes using the regular dino oil then switch. Also if the owners manual calls for 5.5 Qts then only put in 5.5 Qts. Over filling is just as bad if not worse then under filling, it can cause oil foaming at higher RPM's. While under warranty follow Toyota's OCI recommendations so you don't invalidate your warranty.

what do you recommend for 2nd gen's??? I don't remember what my dad uses (he uses a standard oil for all the rigs in the family he takes care of - which I think happens to be Mobil 1)

I have 29 Diesel trucks I have to service today. It is 40 degress and windy today. I am going to be miserable. But at least it is a very profitable business.
I lived in the Atlanta area for 13 years, moved out in 1998. I bought my 1995 Landcruiser in Atlanta. It was on dino for the first 45K miles of it's life and then I switched to Mobil 1. At 90K miles I checked the valve clearance and it looked like new in there. I think the Mobil 1 does a good job shining everything up.

Amsoil?? NO THANKS!!! Start a search on teh web for Suzuki Bandits with cam problems. Only Bandits who run Amsoil have camshafts that wear out quickly. I run Redline and love it. Mobile is great too!
