LawnDart's Build Thread

For anyone playing along, with regards to the head unit, and it's good to know what they cost (3200+ dollars):

So insurance fought and fought and fought, and forced us to install a salvaged unit. Basically insurance has this thing called the LKQ database, which is a thing that allows them to search for components from salvage yards based on P/N and VIN.

Based on my VIN they found 5 of my head units across the CONUS. 1 was clearly damaged with a scratched screen, 1 was in a crash and bent, 2 of them had like 130K miles on them (which by law they can't force us to use), and finally one that MIGHT be okay...but was from a water damaged vehicle.

In spite of them saying we had to use that 1 that MIGHT be okay we fought them, and all agreed that if it wasn't great they'd have to pay re-stocking fees on it AND buy a new one.

So surprise, it showed up to the body shop, damaged screen, scratched buttons, and rust on the metal parts. Waiting to hear back today but Insurance is going to HAVE to buy a new one.

What a goddamn pain.

$3200 for the stock unit (that's crazy)?.... Are you able to use the money to upgrade at this point now?

No. Hence the fight for them to pay for the new OEM one.

That's unfortunate as everyone would win, I would take $2000 cash and then either go aftermarket or wait for one to pop up here for $800 and then pocket the difference - you win and it saves them money..........to bad they wont play that game.

So what are you driving in the mean time?

Why in the world does a stock head unit cost $3200?!

Look up the parts catalog, it's 3200 for some stupid reason because it's that whole big unit, air vents, controls, etc. It's STUPPPPPPID!

I'm currently driving my feet. And taking public transportation when possible. Again...it sucks.

At this point this is a mess of insurance's making, I just want the vehicle back to how it was.

Yeah seriously. You can't BUY the head unit by itself, it and the surrounding plastic/controls/vents are all one part number. Toyota does some DUMB shit.

It's the same as your interior door handles, the chrome ones on a trail edition, 1.50 part, but you can't buy JUST the handle, you have to buy the ENTIRE door panel. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!

The accounting department lol

That's insane. It boggles my mind that they can get some things so right, and completely, and I mean completely, screw up other things.

It's why when I mounted two 1" RAM mount balls to the top that I was kind of in uncharted territory, because you're drilling into something that costs that much if you screw up.

And I probably have to do it again ONCE I get the new head unit.

On the Gen 3 Taco, that surrounding plastic is now a different P/N, and it's like 80-100 dollars (some of the plastic surround is different colors depending on trim level). So Toyota finally wised up.

Haha. After 4 weeks of arguing insurance finally authorized us to order a new head unit. What a goddamn slog this has been.

So question. This thing is getting a legit alarm when it’s back in two weeks.

I’m doing the compustar with remote start. Anyone have any opinions on if I should spend the extra money for ultrasonic sensors?

Get the RPS Touch... I can tell you it has saved my butt once, and that made it 100% worth the cost. Rorck knows what I am talking about...

Also thoughts on the Dronemobile vs the T11 remote?

So, I have the T11 remote. It isn't really going to get you "miles" of range without being in the desert with line-of-site unobstructed. However, it does work through 4 concrete floors at my office to the basement garage and the entire length of my house.

If I remember correctly, you can have both at the same time.

I have thought about adding Drone Mobile for so many reasons. The only reason I didn't right away - I don't even have cellular coverage in most of the places I go... then again, I do have coverage in the places that I would be worried about it... so... maybe I should jump on that.

I'm mulling over the Drone Mobile setup just to save costs on the T11.

T11 is worth every penny. The range is impressive. It works where there is no cellular signal (like every location we've been camping at the past 4 weekends). Most importantly, the 2-way functionality works. I had the remote wake me up from a dead sleep in my hotel room in Dumas, TX when 2 guys tried to steal my FuelPax from the roof rack. My dash cam caught the footage of them. They ran as soon the alarm went off, but I was at the window in time to see them running off... empty handed.

The best installer in Portland qouted me 1600 including the T11, DAS sensor, 4 ultrasonic sensors, and the remote start + Labor.

Think it's worth doing?
